🥁🫙 DRUMROLL PLEASE! 🫙🥁

Announcing our winners from Week 1 of the Greenmarket Fall Cooking Challenge! We had four incredible submissions and, of course, we couldn’t choose just one. In recognition of their delicious work AND for helping us launch this season’s cooking challenge, each of them will win a limited-edition, Greenmarket 50th Anniversary tote AND $20 in Greenmarket bucks. Congrats, winners!!

Preserve the Harvest Week was all about savoring and saving summer produce before it’s gone. Each submission was unique, delicious, and highlighted preservation techniques for an array of products! Here’s what they made:

🌶️🍑: We had a twofer from hifromthemarket! Pickled biquinho peppers from Halal Pastures AND peach jam with peaches from Oak Grove Plantation, both sourced from the Union Square Greenmarket!
🌽: Cooking For One | Anjali S. saved her corn cobs from the 79th Street Greenmarket to make this corn stock that she’ll use to impart summery corn flavor to soups all winter long!
🥒: Lacto-fermented cucumbers from Marta of the McCarren Park Greenmarket! She sourced the cucumbers from , one of our founding farmers. Her tip for extra crispy pickles? Stick a bay leaf in the brine!
🌿 Cashew pesto using basil & garlic from Kernan Farm for the freezer from Meredith and her pup, Hudson!

Thanks for sharing the inspiration and supporting your local farmers, team!

ICYMI, it’s Apple (and Pear and Quince) Week! Submissions are due on Monday, October 19 at 12PM!

Today, as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the agricultural wisdom that sustained Indigenous communities across the Americas for generations and continues to inform sustainable agricultural practices around the world today.

The Three Sisters is one such practice. Also known as companion planting, when corn, beans, and squash grow together, they mutually support one another and enhance the soil’s fertility. For many Indigenous communities, the Three Sisters were considered “the physical and spiritual sustainers of life.”

Corn is the eldest sister. She grows tall to provide a natural trellis for the beans, the middle sister. Beans enrich the soil with nitrogen. Little sister squash grows low to the ground and her large leaves shade the soil, keeping it hydrated and inhibiting w**d growth.

The three sisters work together to grow strong, improve the health of the soil, and yield a bountiful harvest. Together they teach us to use our unique strengths to grow together! 🌽🫘🎃

🍏🍎🍏 WELCOME TO APPLE WEEK!! 🍎🍏🍎

It’s WEEK 2 of our October Cooking Challenge!!! This week? APPLES! AND PEARS! AND EVEN QUINCE!! Your orchardists have been hard at work tending to the 2026 crop and it is time to celebrate the most abundant time of year for the fruits of their labor.

So head to your local Greenmarket and stock up on all manner of orchard fruit! Apples definitely have main character energy this time of year but we don’t discriminate- pears and quince get to shine this week, too! From sweet to savory, fresh, sautéed, baked, and poached, we want to see what you all have up your sleeves this apple season.

Here’s how to participate in our Fall Cooking Challenge!

✨ Tune in every Monday throughout October for your weekly challenge.
✨ Once the challenge drops, you have exactly one week to get to your local Greenmarket, get your ingredients, and get cooking. Submissions are due the following Monday at 12PM!
