Thank You Again for the Last 6 Years!
I've learned a lot over the last 6 years and especially the last 2 years with operating the storefront. I gave it all I had and left it all on the field, and I will be forever grateful to everyone who shared the vision with me for expanding access to quality groceries in Bed Stuy. I'm sorry I couldn't keep it going in this format, but I'll be sure to let you all know if I go at it again in any way. For now, I'm going to recover and reconnect with my family and myself.
If you're looking for recommendations for where to get quality groceries next, here are my top picks:
Brooklyn Supported Agriculture (Run by Brooklyn Packers)
224 Marcus Garvey Blvd, Brooklyn, NY 11221 (between Van Buren and Greene)
In-Person Hours: Thursday + Friday 4pm-7pm, Saturday + Sunday 12pm-4pm
Brooklyn Packers was founded in May 2016, as a Black-led, worker-owned cooperative reclaiming the local food system for the people.
We stand as a bridge between the land and the block, connecting small to mid sized farms and sustainable food producers to our communities and wholesale partners who reflect our values to build true food sovereignty from Hudson to Brooklyn and beyond. We’re here, for you, on Marcus Garvey Boulevard and online at brooklynsupportedagriculture.com
GrowNYC Farmers Markets, Farmstands, and Gardens (https://grownyc.org/locations/)
GrowNYC is the largest organization in NYC organizing farmers markets and similar food outlets in the city. They have a searchable map for all of their markets and they take EBT and farmers market coupons. Pro tip: Many gardens and farmstands (even a couple in Bed Stuy) run a "fresh food box" program, similar to the produce boxes we sold at Mitch's Provisions.
Farm to People (https://farmtopeople.com/) (Online Retailer and Event Space)
Farm to People’s mission is to make great food conveniently available to everyone in NYC. We provide an easy alternative or compliment to other channels like farm stands, CSAs and farmers markets. Here, you have access to high quality food and the ability to enjoy deliveries on your schedule, with no upfront fees, or large time commitments.
Horseradish Market (https://www.instagram.com/horseradishmarket/)
Open daily, 9am-9pm at Broadway and Lewis Ave
A great place to shop small. They have great packaged foods, a nice produce selection, and they always want to hear from their customers about what they should stock.
Greene Hill Food Co-Op (https://www.greenehillfood.coop/)
A traditional (but small and mighty) food co-op on the border of Bed Stuy and Clinton Hill. Greene Hill is one of a handful of 100% working food co-ops in the USA. Together we build community, keep our prices low and our food quality high.
I also really love the Korean "Mr" grocery stores like Mr. Kiwi, Mr. Melon, and Mr. Coco. Although their produce is conventional, they have great prices. My wife and I will probably do a mix of going Brooklyn Supported Agriculture, farmers markets, online ordering, and the "Mr's".
HERE ARE A COUPLE OF LOW-WASTE QUALITY GROCERY STORES TOO OUTSIDE OF BED STUY (BUT STILL IN BROOKLYN):
Precycle (https://www.precyclenyc.com/) (Prospect Heights)
Precycle exists to empower customers to reduce their environmental impact by reducing food and packaging waste. We believe that every customer has the right to know where their food originates and to be given the choice of reusable instead of disposable. At Precycle, we work with local farmers and distributors on a one-on-one basis. We are determined to provide our customers with as much information and support as possible. This is our passion. This is what we believe in. Sharing resources, creating awareness and helping each other.
Maison Jar (https://maisonjar.nyc/) (Greenpoint)
Maison Jar is a refillery and grocery store located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. A one-stop-shop for food, personal care, and home essentials – all without unnecessary packaging.
HERE'S A GREAT COMPANY TO FOLLOW FOR FARM TRIPS AND SEASONAL CATERING:
Local Roots (https://localrootsnyc.com/)
Founded by Wen-Jay Ying
Wen-Jay is a recognized expert in local food, entrepreneurship, and community building, with speaking engagements at the United Nations, NYC City Hall, SiriusXM, and as a guest lecturer at the International Culinary Center.
Her engaging sessions combine storytelling, practical insights, and actionable takeaways that inspire conversation and impact back at the office. Proud to be a female, minority owned small business.
HERE'S WHERE TO GET INVOLVED AT THE GROUND FLOOR WITH AN AWESOME FOOD CO-OP BUILDING A MAGNIFICENT SPACE IN BED STUY:
Central Brooklyn Food Co-Op (https://cbfood.coop/)
The Central Brooklyn Food Cooperative (CBFC) is a Black-led, cooperatively-owned grocery store (opening soon) to create a more just and sustainable food system in Central Brooklyn. We provide affordable, fresh, and culturally-sustaining food to uplift Black food sovereignty and economic self-determination. CBFC is more than a grocery store—it’s a hub for community power.

🚛 IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN BUYING BULK/WHOLESALE (perhaps your have a large household or want to organize among a few families), you can start an account with the best vendors I used (delivery days are 1-3 times per week in a 4 hour delivery window, usually with a $300 or so order minimum):
Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative (https://lancasterfarmfresh.com/wholesale/)
Farms2Tables (https://www.transparentfood.co/farms2tables) (Different than Farm to People, the online retailer)
Fingerlakes Farms (https://ilovenyfarms.com/)
Please continue to follow on Instagram for updates on what I'm doing next. I'm in final round interviews with an awesome Jewish appetizing company in Brooklyn, so maybe I'll be lucky enough to go from being your grocer to being your deli man!
👋 Goodbye for now, and I'll see you around the neighborhood!
