We have a brand new fridge! Yesterday, we went to Laughing Fork in Highland, NY to pick up some fresh leafy greens they just harvested from their fields. We currently have lacinato kale, bok choy, rainbow chard and red lettuce.

Fresh, local vegetables were always part of our plan, but this tiny shop has had a lot of challenges. When we opened, we purchased a secondhand refrigerator from a local business, but it broke down last summer and it took us 6 months to find someone to look at it. Spoiler alert: he couldn’t fix it.

After a lot of searching (and struggling), we finally found this replacement and we’d love to fill it with food purchased directly from local farmers. Shipping cases of out-of-season produce from across the country on refrigerator trucks just isn’t our style.

I love the idea of people walking down Main Street, turning the corner into our shop and grabbing everything they need for dinner. Don’t you? What would you like to see us stock this summer? The more interest we have, the more veggies we’ll be able to carry.

PS: Amanda () said it was important for our new fridge to be pretty. Please tell our fridge you think it’s cute; it was really expensive. We’ll be able to add more things to it with your support!

We have a fresh batch of tofu today from our friends at the Great Joy Family Farm in Pine Plains, NY! Pick some up and make something delicious, like this gochujang tofu from Little Rice Noodle.

Yang and Kathi () made this quick, healthy dish in their air fryer; I used the “air fry” setting on my toaster oven and it came out just as crispy and delicious. I’d highly recommend giving it a try! I served mine with our organic jasmine rice and baby bok choy Dirt Dance Farm.

Organic cornstarch (which we sell in bulk) is responsible for the crispy coating on this low-oil dish. We also carry chili flakes, soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds (all organic!). Stop by and visit us this holiday weekend. We’d love to see you!

Bring on the heat! One of our newest snacks (and my current fav) is this Organic Island Heat Trail Mix from Tierra Farm in Valatie, NY. Made with chewy dried pineapple, maple toasted coconut, BBQ almonds and spicy pepitas, this tropical medley is bright and vibrant, with the perfect balance of spicy and sweet. It’s a brand new blend — try it here first!

Speaking of snacks, we recently restocked our Earth Gems! One of our best sellers, these vegan chocolate candies are like mini M&Ms, but are made by a small business with natural colors, derived from real foods like spirulina, turmeric and beets. One of our youngest customers refers to them as “blue beans” (which is adorable), so I hung them on the wall with our other bulk beans. 😉

Earth Gems’ maker, Trupo Treats, is run by two brothers and they recently relocated their operations to Albany, NY, so now, they’re local too! Shop small! Support your community! Buy in bulk and avoid plastic waste!

Have you ever heard someone use the term “locally made,” only to find out that description was barely true at all? Adrienne at Flax Fiber Farm not only means it, but has taken the definition to a whole new extreme. We’re really impressed with what they’re working on and couldn’t be more excited to share this project with you.

Inspired by a passionate battle against a barberry bush, creates embroidery kits meant not only to encourage creativity and yield beautiful craft projects, but also to spread awareness and education about invasive plants.

Each kit starts with 100% Hudson Valley wool felt, which will serve as your canvas. The wool comes from small, local farms and is washed, carded and felted. Next, wool embroidery floss is spun at a locally run mill and Adrienne dyes it into an array of vibrant colors, created solely with local flowers. Plants are chosen and designed into original patterns that are then printed onto dissolvable templates so they can be transferred to the wool. Two nickel-free needles are included to help you get stitching, and perhaps, most important of all, is a zine filled with hard-earned invasive species plant knowledge and embroidery instructions. All of this is packaged in a recycled and recyclable envelope… and, now available at our shop!

Every purchase supports our local farm-to-fabric economy and directly funds invasive species removal, allowing more native plants to prosper. Designs we’re currently stocking include Multiflora Rose and English Ivy (my personal nemesis). These kits would make a great present for the crafty person in your life, or, if you like to embroider, I bet your mom would love the finished project, too!

It’s Earth Day! A lot of businesses will use today and this weekend as a marketing opportunity, but I’m here to remind you that Earth Day started as a radical event and we need to reclaim it as one.

Instead of feeling fatigued by advertisements for greenwashed products, let’s do something! Make art, boycott brands that harm humans and the environment, encourage a friend or family member to make a small lifestyle change, bring a reusable cup to the coffee shop, ride your bike or the bus, spread awareness about how little plastic is ever recycled (less than 6%) …and keep going! It’s never too late to start and no step is too small.

United, our actions are stronger. When we all join together, we can create the future we want to see.

Are you a fan of delicious cheesy flavors? Looking to add more plants to your plate? You’re in luck! We have some new sauces I’m super excited about. Made with real vegetables like tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots and potatoes, these are small batch, dairy-free options you can feel good about!

As a fun bonus, our Cajuu cashew cheeses are on sale all month long. Made in Kingston, NY by our friends at Urugula, these vegan cheese wheels are the best I’ve ever had. You can shred ‘em, slice ‘em, and melt ‘em. Perfect on pasta, paired with any of our new tomato sauces. (Did I mention there’s a beautiful black cat right on the label?)

Our new House Party Cheesy Dips (available in your choice of Mild Cheddar or Jalapeño) and Fabalish’s Queso are nut-free. The Queso is even certified organic! (And, I hear it’s made with magic—swipe to read the label. I had some with dinner last night and was really impressed.) Come try something new; tell your friends!

And don’t forget about our bulk nutritional yeast! I still can’t believe how fast we go through 50lbs. A 50lb box of nutritional yeast is a really big box!

While we love championing local makers, we also appreciate finding likeminded farmers and producers across the country (and the world) creating delicious, specialty foods. New on our shelves are a variety of pastas and sauces from Italy; olives, dips and spreads from Greece; and sauces made in Vermont, based on recipes from Yemen and China.

Bona Furtuna promotes bio-diversity, open pollination and sustainable farming. The tomatoes used in their sauces are vine-ripened under the Sicilian sun. We’re now carrying three of their organic pasta sauces: puttanesca, basil marinara and spicy arrabbiata, as well as passata (crushed tomatoes). There’s also three unique styles of pesto: sweet pepper, wild fennel almond, and Trapanese (almond, tomato), all of which are vegan!

Pastificio Masciarelli, based in Abruzzo, is one of Italy’s oldest family-run pasta producers. Established in 1867, they are being run by the fifth-generation. Their pasta is bronze-cut with handmade dies for a rough, rustic surface that clings to sauces. We picked up their fettuccine and chitarra (long, square-shaped strands similar to but much more exciting than spaghetti).

Come see what’s new and pick up something easy and wholesome for dinner. Black Cat Bulk Goods is open 11AM-6PM.

Tofu can be so many things; it’s such a versatile ingredient! I love using it in stir fries, cooking Chinese and Korean recipes, and even blending it to create different “cheeses” and sauces. The past few days, we used tofu to reimagine some eggy dishes.

Over the weekend, Jim used our medium firm tofu to make a broccoli quiche, and this evening, we made a tofu carbonara pasta sauce we served with bucatini. The carbonara sauce came together pretty quickly with onions, garlic, tofu, parsley and lemon juice. Traditionally, this dish is made with pancetta, but we used vital wheat gluten to create a seitan sausage. I like how a powder in my pantry can transform into a plant-based protein at a moment’s notice.

We get our tofu from the Great Joy Family Farm, who uses organic soybeans they grow themselves. We pick it up in reusable containers so you can buy it in bulk from our shop, without any of the disposable plastic packaging you’ll find in the supermarket. If you’d like some, come pick up a jar, or stop by with your own containers. We’re open Wednesday 11AM-6PM.

New! We love finding new brands leaning into zero waste. Fabalish, based in New Jersey, makes falafel and uses the aquafaba from their chickpeas to create delicious vegan sauces! We are now carrying their classic mayo, queso and creamy chili crisp ranch in our brand new grab and go fridge. Each one is dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free and nut-free!

We’ve been busy adding more sauces and condiments to our shelves — and adding more shelves to our store. Right now, I’m working on a shelving unit that’s over 6 feet wide. What’s something you’d like to see here?

We also restocked our Hot Crispy Oil, a chili crisp made in Albany (the extra hot is my favorite!), and picked up a new umami sauce from Nori’s Story based in NYC. Please leave any suggestions or special requests below!
