I’ve not been feeling very photogenic lately. But, these Lisianthus deserve some exposure. As always, Smoke has you ladies covered on Wednesday. $15 bouquets for yall. Fellas, come get your girl some for $20. Had a little pushback on why I give the ladies a discount. Three easy to understand answers. 1) if she has to buy her own flowers then she probably deserves a little discount. 2) honestly, ladies are usually nicer. 3) because I can.

Also, the first watermelons are rolling out of the fields right now. We should have plenty today.

My wife planned the sweetest party for our senior and kindergarten graduates. Wood fired pizza truck, Good Humor ice cream truck and tons of family and friends. Change is all around us. Farming has taught me that I can plan, but I can’t control. Enjoy the small moments, once they are gone they are just a photograph and memory. These are the good old days.

Feels like 97 outside today. First shade I have found in hours. When it’s this hot I just want to be left in silence and enjoy the first corn of the season. Crew did well today. No one quit. No one cried. No fighting. Mistakes were made, but it wasn’t a lack of effort. Not following my exact instructions probably contributed to that. But, what does this old man know? If the sun comes up we will give it another shot tomorrow.

If I’m being honest, I’ve been irritated on how far behind I think we are on some things this season. I know every square inch of our farms and it’s just not up to my standard right now. I was cutting grass this morning at daylight and looked out at the stand. It’s not perfect, but she sure ain’t bad either.

Bringing the heat today. $15 bouquets for my girls. $20 for you dudes.

Had another one of teenage boys quit yesterday. He said the job was just too demanding. I could tell his spirit wasn’t broken, but mentally he knew it was not for him. That’s ok. I did actually appreciate that he came to me face to face and thank me for the opportunity. He will hopefully find his place. The world needs people in offices and those doing manual labor just the same. I will say this though, we can raise gentlemen that are also tough. Teach them to quit tomorrow. And have that mindset everyday. That’s what I’m trying to do at least.

My dog Scout has moved up our wake up call to about 2:15 for about the last week. Unlike her, once my feet hit the floor and my little brain starts to thinking, I can’t go back to sleep. On the positive, I’m very productive and getting lots of overtime.

Thought I’d give yall an idea of what is happening in the fields. Hopefully last of our dahlias being planted today. First bushel of green beans picked. Corn maybe for the weekend? Lots of pickles, squash and zucchini. $25 a box for anyone wanting to store some away. Harvesting our garlic field tomorrow. Don’t anticipate it being a great crop due to the Spring drought. Average size and not overly impressive. I’ve heard that before…

Open 8-6. Rain or shine vegetables still gotta be sold.

I started farming because I thought I’d enjoy it and because I thought I could make money in a very difficult business. But, I never anticipated how much people would learn to appreciate what we bring to the community. We have good weeks and a few bad mixed in as well. And almost daily someone comes up to me with some kind words and sometimes even gifts. Thank you guys for that. The hardest part of the year is coming up. June, July and August will test even the best farmers and I’m certainly not that. Eyes straight ahead, lots of water and refusing to quit is the only advice I can give our crew somedays. We appreciate yall showing up day after day for us.

I got a message this week from a family asking if I had any discounted produce? That unfortunately they are having a hard time. It got me to thinking how hard that has to be for someone to send that message. And I’m sure it would be even harder in person. And I got to thinking about people that I know that would be too embarrassed to ask me personally for help. I can totally understand that. If any of yall ever have a day that you can’t afford vegetables for your kids, stop by and speak with one of my adult staff. You can do it off to the side and no one has to know. You don’t need to go through me. And they will take care of you. I’ve said it before and it’s something I really believe in, we don’t do handouts, but we are in the business of investing in people.

Got a beautiful day coming up. Farmstand and flowers open 8-6. BOGO in the nursery. Suns out, guns out. Probably have a cigar this morning. Then try to get a lift in on my lunch break. All that good stuff.

Thought I’d address something real quick because I’m getting so many messages lately. Getting a lot of yall sliding in my DMs with the Big S on your mind. And sometimes stopping by the stand, strutting your stuff, wanting a minute with Smoke. Telling me all the things you can do for me. Asking me if I’m happy with my current arrangement? How your the one that gonna take me to new levels. Sending me edited pictures. All the stuff you think a guy like me wants to see and hear. I’m talking to you Solicitors! I’m a busy guy. Don’t have time for outside noise right now. Slide back in sometime in January and I’ll at least hear you out. I took one online marketing class back in college. My insurance is up to par, my point of sale works as it should, I got beautiful products, decent mustache and average wit and personality. I got marketing and logistics covered for the moment.
