History lesson Tuesday coming at ya...
Have you ever wondered how carving pumpkins started? I did. So I started to research...why do we carve pumpkins?
What started out carving gholish faces onto turnips and beets has become our now known tradition of carving pumpkins.
Stingy Jack was an Irish myth. He was a trickster that was denied to be allowed into heaven and he** after death; therefore, his spirit was only allowed to roam earth. The devil sent Stingy Jack on his way with only a piece of burning coal. Stingy Jack then put it inside a carved out turnip.
Just like the punishment, the towns people wanted to ward off the evil, families would carve out the faces into turnips and beets. Place the coal inside and leave them on the window sils or on the outdoor steps. This was not only to protect them from Stingy Jacks soul, but other wandering spirits as well.
As the Irish immigrated to North America, they found that pumpkins are much larger and easier to hallow out.
Thanks to the Irish Immigrants, we don't have to carve out beets! Instead we get pumpkin seeds that turn into a yummy snack.
How's that for a fun history lesson?
Don't forget....guess the weight of the pumpkin. Link provided to put your guesses on that post!!!!
