Our Pledge to Our Customers

The Sweetwater Local Foods Market pledges that the animal and vegetable products sold in this market were grown and raised locally – within the State of Michigan – in a manner that….

…builds a living soil that enhances biological diversity as the critical component for growing healthy food,

…promotes animal welfare by respecting animal nature and recognizing the role that animals play in the soil-food-web, and

…fosters human and environmental health as a result. This means Sweetwater Local Foods Market farmers have pledged to use:

NO SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS or SOIL TREATMENTS
NO SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL PESTICIDES OR HERBICIDES on VEGETABLES & FRUITS
NO GROWTH PROMOTING ANTIBIOTICS OR HORMONES
And further, that

ALL ANIMALS ARE GIVEN ROUTINE ACCESS TO OUTDOOR AREAS WHEN SEASONALLY APPROPRIATE
FARMERS WILL NOT INTENTIONALLY USE GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS IN SEED OR FEED PRODUCTS. *

Value Added Products including Preserved Foods, Baked Goods, Body Care & Cleaning Products

Producers & Vendors of these products have pledged to:

USE NO SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS IN ANY OF THE PRODUCTS OFFERED FOR SALE. USE CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENTS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. USE LOCAL ORGANICALLY GROWN INGREDIENTS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. LABEL INGREDIENTS COMPLETELY.
* Position on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s)

The Sweetwater Local Foods Market (SLFM) is opposed to use of GMO’s in all foods consumed by both animals and humans and endorses the National Organic Program (NOP) standards on GMO’s. Current government policies regarding GMO products do not require that they be labeled. SLFM believes this is patently wrong and we encourage you, the consumer to speak up and insist that at the very least the government act responsibly and require labeling of all products containing GMO’s. If a product is labeled Certified Organic and includes a USDA NOP seal you are guaranteed that the product is organic AND non-GMO. All food producers at Sweetwater are required, at the very least, to provide proof they use non-GMO feeds for their animals & non-GMO ingredients for their value added products. By itself, non-GMO DOES NOT mean organically grown; it simply means the product has not been genetically modified. Farmers choosing to use non-GMO but conventionally grown feeds will disclose that through proper signage at their booth. We believe that you have a RIGHT TO KNOW everything about the food you buy for yourself and your family! If you have questions about the food sold at Sweetwater, ask our farmers! They are more than happy to talk about how they raise their plants and animals.

If you read the news you know that the source of the cyclospora outbreak has been identifed and it's no surprise - a huge farm conglomerate shipping produce from somewhere in Mexico to restaurants and stores all over the country. If you want food that's at peak freshness and is safe to eat you can't do better than get out to a farmers market tomorrow and support your local farmers. Especially given the fact that none of them had any choice to stay inside to avoid the hazardous smoke from the Canadian wildfires. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/182rQRsQ3t/

What a wild week! Super high heat indexes, parasitic outbreaks, intense wildfire smoke, and perhaps the worst air quality levels Michigan has ever seen. It was not the most fun week to work on a farm. We started earlier in the morning and quit early, only doing essential tasks. I am grateful for the incredible team of people who gave it their all this week to fulfill the high demand of locally grown produce, higher than normal due to the cyclospora outbreak.

Our produce is safe to eat!!!

We test our water annually (it’s always met all standards for drinking), have an annual meeting with a Michigan Food Safety representative to go over our food safety program, use a food grade sanitizing solution (Sanidate) in all rinse water when washing vegetables, and of course, have an accessible hand washing station that is used by all employees. Our water is safe, our employees are clean, and we take great care and pride in supplying clean produce to our customers!

Thanks again to Stu, Kassie, Ian, Anna, Al, and Savannah, for their hard work this week. We are all happy to be done with farm work this week but very excited to see you all at the markets tomorrow! Your support would be so incredibly appreciated after the tough conditions we worked in. Also, you can get some fresh, beautiful lettuce (just one of many things!) that you can safely eat without worrying about getting sick. This is what we do each and every week, and we are stocked up with so much fresh, clean produce for you all tomorrow!

Well put Bear Creek Organic Farm!

This week has been hard on all of us but none more so than on our farmers. This is the peak of the summer harvest season and they simply cannot sit this wildfire smoke and ultra high temps out. There has never been a more important reason to get out on market day tomorrow and support your local farmers!

"Just stay inside"

Y'all!
Our farm is outside.
The crops are outside.
The food grows in the soil in a field. Outside.
It's acres upon acres of open fields.
Not just on our farm, but on every farm in Michigan.
We appreciate the sentiment, but we cannot just 'stay inside'.
And neither can our fellow farmers, ranchers, orchardists, and other food-growing colleagues.
In Michigan, we are in the middle of our PEAK season.
Across all of Michigan, there are hundreds of millions of dollars of crops growing right now. Outside.
That's our livelihoods. Our life's work. The whole enchilada.

I'm sorry, but we're going to be outside.
I'm sorry that we have to be. We didn't ask for this.
We're taking as many precautions as we can.
And I'm sorry if seeing our team working outside makes you uncomfortable.
Our nation has an unfortunate history of hiding how our food is grown and the people who grow it. Our farm has prided itself on being transparent with our customers. And we speak for all farmers when we tell you that we will continue to show up.
Right now, there are tens of thousands of agricultural workers in the state of Michigan who are combatting incredibly challenging conditions to show up to grow your food. Please support your local farmers. Don't tell them to wait inside. That's not how this works.

The more this week has progressed, the less sure we are that people know where their food comes from.

Obviously we WANT to stay inside, but then the food would rot in the field. The market shelves would be empty. Our community would lack access to safe, organic, local food.

The cruel irony is, in the midst of a parasite-infested-lettuce outbreak, our work on a local level is more important than ever. And at the same time, it is more hazardous than ever.

Our region was #1 in the world for worst air quality this week. That's the wrong competition to be in first place.

We have limited outdoor activity to only the most essential tasks. We have masks available for all staff. We have rearranged our schedules and our to-do lists.

But when you come into our Market, you are going to find tables and shelves absolutely overflowing with abundance. And that is because of the work we're doing outside. Everyday. For you.

Today, like everyday, we are incredibly grateful for our team. Everyone has stepped up to tackle this week with a level of gumption and can-do spirit that is rare these days. Those of us who are unable to safely work in these conditions are at home or inside. Those of us who are able to carry on, are showing up and stepping up.

And deep down we know, that all of the things we are putting off for now, the so-called 'non-essentials', are piling on to our to-do list after the skies clear. Whenever that is. And the sheer amount of catching up that looms is almost more intimidating than the apocalyptic skies we are working under right now.

On behalf of all Michigan farmers, thank you for your support. We're doing the best we can with the hand we've been dealt. If you need to find us, we'll be out here growing your food.
