These quail are transitioning into the flock today! They will be near the others until they become accustomed to each other, then they will be released. 17 more. Hopefully mostly hens.

Busy day! We just fixed the Lawnmower and it ran like a dream! The kids divided and conquered the weedwhacking and the sweeping/ vacuuming. We have another day at least of mowing since the mower has been down since last summer, and more weedwhacking to do, but now even the shortest of us can walk without weeds pulling at our ankles! Some good friends came from out of state and we got to socialize the bunnies a little. I love this pic!

Corie- When I was in the military, one of my many different jobs and duties was a Programs Manager. I absolutely loved the job and I was good at keeping regulations and books. The days I hated were the ones where I was blindsided by a regulation I did not know about, and had to scramble to fix an error in procedure that I would have otherwise kept straight from the start. I recently found one of these errors in my farm records, and regrettably it affects others as well.

Our 19 original quail were bought at a farm/ranch store a year ago. No questions asked of us. I was under the impression that they were coturnix at the time, color, pharoah, which is an acceptable bird under the rules to just buy at a store and raise like any chicken. As they grew and started laying eggs and calling, we were a little confused that the eggs had no speckles. I told Tom that their call sounded a bit like a bob-white, and he told me I'll bet they are Bobwhite Quail. I have no background with quail, so we looked it up, and sure enough everything fit.

Fast forward, I am looking up any regulations I can find to be in compliance with any rules for sales of animals and eggs for local farmers markets or sales to retailers, and I find out that Bobwhite Quail require a Gamebird breeders license to possess, or sell birds or eggs, with a fine of up to $500 for EACH offense to include not keeping records of sales or egg production daily not on a form 325A. My mind jerks back to how many quail eggs we have sold, how many new hatches we have, the birds we have lost to collisions or stress, all the records not on the 325A form. OVER A YEAR. My skin is crawling. Let's just say that if we hadn't caught this, we could owe thousands, and we haven't even made $100.

We were failed by a breeder making money, and blindsided. We don't want to pass it on. Our birds are now licensed and we are taking measures to record every bird, every egg. The very LAST thing we want is for anyone to be in this situation because we put them there.

Luckily we keep private records that cover the entire time that we can transcribe, and we will have receipts for buyers to back them up as well. We apologise for the inconvenience, we work for our customers and that should not be in doubt. Full transparency is always the best policy.

TAHC inspection is done, and our permit is on the way! Special mentions about how clean and cozy our farm is for the animals, and another about how well organized and accessible our farm binder is for all areas of farm information, certificates, and history!

We have 19 quail chicks so far, and only six more unhatched! They are so tiny! That is my index finger in the pic next to one, and our daughter's hand in the other! Nobody tells you that these guys can really dart! They went from drowsy to Speedy Gonzales in seconds!

We had steadily lost some of our hens over the year to flight collisions and stress, and had to let a bunch of our roos go to maintain the ratio. I kept a couple dozen eggs back over a couple weeks to try and replenish the flock. Day 18 in the incubator came and went, and our hope was tanking. Day 22 we were about to pull the eggs and try something else and these two arrived! A day later and there are now 11!! I am really hoping this is a hen-heavy brood!
