Longtime resident and Market champion, Joann Muneta, shares not only how music at the Market first began, but how it moved to its well-known location of Jackson Street parking lot. “Myself, Mary Dupree, and Bill Wharton, we went to the Mayor and asked to have an Arts Commission…Linda [Pall] was on city council at the time and Bill found out that it was possible to get grant money from a music union in Spokane to have musicians perform in Friendship Square. So he came up with the idea of getting bands and musicians to play in Friendship Square at the time Linda was trying to develop Friendship Square into what it was; it didn’t even a name before the City held a contest [for naming that area]. So that started, and Linda said to the City, ‘Well, since we have the music, I think that the Arts Commission would be in a good position to take over the Market’. [The Market] was outgrowing the little space next to City Hall and becoming popular. So that’s how it got moved to Jackson Street with one bay on Friendship Square.”
