Not quite two months old, and they’re loving the rain and that watermelon rind.

It seems of late that the media is filled with breaking news about bacterial and parasitic outbreaks in leafy vegetables, eggs, etc. If you look for a common denominator, it’s always linked to massive farms and factory processing of goods. These products get spread around our nation and internationally causing sickness in hundreds or thousands of people and sometimes causing death.

So, what can you do? You can grow your own food or buy from local growers.

You have probably never heard of illness out breaks from a small farm’s lettuce or a salmonella outbreak in your neighbor’s coop. Not to say that it can’t happen, but it’s rare.

For perspective, you may need an act of congress to get inside access to a government run farm, but your local homesteader will happily info dump on your tour around. You might even get a few snacks along the way.
