Whetzells Turkey Thyme and Homestead Goodies

Whetzells Turkey Thyme and Homestead Goodies We are a small poultry farm. All heritage birds. I have Welshie Ducklings & Light Sussix Chicks. This means I am old and trying to stay alive!!

I am studying and I have chosen to experiment various genetic colorations by breeding Slates, Palms, Bronze, Narragansett, Bourbon Reds. Soon to be retiring and starting a new and very exciting chapter. Haha... Seriously. I love all the self taught hobbies I have had the privilege to make. I will have a little farm stand here selling some favorites. From soaps, to flowers, to calendars to baked goods to canned goods. All the things I enjoy and now get to share with my local community.

Sad and important to realize about all heritage breeds and actually foods that are heritage.

A national treasure lost to history...

The Nebraskan Variety... a truly unique variety... with a gene all it's own... now gone forever...

The Nebraskan had the genotype of a bronze based (bb) with the only version of the gene to make this breed, spotted (spsp)... true breeding with unique poults and coloring... not seen in the US in decades and now believed to be gone from the last remaining flocks in the UK...

The Nebraskan (named for the state they were from) was developed from a rare spotted mutation which popped up in some broad breasted turkeys in 1947. It now serves as an reminder of the importance of conservation of our heritage birds because these unique genes are now lost forever...

It was rather recent (March of 2026) that they were declared "believed" to be extinct. There is a slim possibility that someone out there has them discretely. I wouldn't count on it... so we now officially say goodbye to a legend modern turkey breeders can only imagine...

Had your heard of this now extinct variety?
