The apple growing tradition of the Oakes family and LynOaken Farms dates back to 1918 when our grandfather purchased land in rural Orleans County in Western New York State to grow the best apples possible.

🐝 We spent some time in the orchard yesterday staking the youngest apple trees and ran into our favorite beekeeper checking on his hive. I was able to get up close and personal with these busy little workers, and I learned so much! Steve showed me the larvae in the cells that haven’t been capped yet (check out pic #3!), the queen cells where new queens are developing (and eventually neatly exiting through a perfectly circular opening at the base of the cell - see pic #4!), how you can tell the difference between a male drone and the ever busy female workers, and more! It turns out I know a lot about pollination, but not that much about the pollinators! 😁

🍯Big thanks to The Backyard Buzz for the lesson! Bloom lasted a bit longer than usual this year due to the cool and rainy weather, but these next few days of sunshine and heat will wind things down pretty quickly. Soon these honeybees will be moved to work the wildflowers in other local fields. We appreciate their hard work so much… can you see the tiny fruitlet developing below the finished blossom in the last pic?

🐝+🌸=🍎 Some of our most important workers arrived in the orchard tonight! The honeybees are here! Big thanks to Chris’ brother Steve from The Backyard Buzz for bringing his fuzzy friends out to help with pollination! The bees will stay in the orchard for the next 10 days or so- helping our native bee species to pollinate the 3 million+ blossoms that will be opening across the 8 acres of the Upick orchard this week. Hoping we get some warmer temps and clearer skies so these guys can really fly!

🌻🎃 Hooray! Our seed order is in! We have loved experimenting with our pumpkin patch and cut sunflowers and can’t wait to give it another go this season! We are so fortunate to have Harris Seeds, a nationally recognized leader in vegetable and flower seed production since 1879, so close by in Rochester, NY! Now…. No promises, but if you could choose something new for us to grow at LynOaken Upick, what would it be?!

🍎🍏We have great news!!! We have a signed lease to run LynOaken Upick for the 2026 season!!! Yahooo!!!! As long as everything goes ok during the growing season, we hope to open the last weekend of August! We’re so excited and can’t wait to see you in the orchard this fall!

Now… time to get to work! Cue the pruners! 🍏🍎

🎃🍎Happy Halloween!!! Our spookiest apple in the orchard is finally open for picking! Come and get the Arkansas Black while you can! We are open today, 10am-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm. There’s only one row of these beauties, so when they’re gone - they’re gone!
