NEW: local, woman & Indigenous owned beaded earrings available at the Co-op! 🫐🍓
Pamela Valdez, owner of SkodenSisters, is a citizen or M’chigeeng First Nation. She has been a beadwork artist for over 30 years and attributes her artistic growth from her time at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Sant Fe, New Mexico. Pamela identifies as an Indigenous food warrior advocating for the story of Anishnaabe language and food within the community of Gitchi-Namebini Ziibing (Marquette).
We’re so happy to have Pamela’s art available at the Co-op and to have her as part of our team at the MFC (she also works on our Outreach team as our Community Services Coordinator)!
One question she’s been asked that she thought important to address: Is it cultural appropriation to wear Indigenous earrings if I’m a settler?
“It is not cultural appropriation to wear Indigenous earrings if you are a settler, it is actually a form of cultural appreciation! As my earrings are not regalia, they are for everyone to wear and enjoy. Miigwetch (Thank you) for supporting indigenous art.” -Pamela
Stay tuned for a full feature on Pamela and SkodenSisters in July, as she’ll be our Local Vendor Spotlight!
