Newsletter #191: October 24-30
“Spooky, scary skeletons send shivers down your spine…” Welcome to Halloween week! This week will probably be full of full moons, foggy nights, and stormy nights with lots of thunder and lightning…..let me see what the weather shows….Wow! Temperatures will be in the upper 60s-lower 70s, there will be no rain, and the lows will be in the upper 30s, so no frosts. Looks like a beautiful week ahead to me!
Sunday night, there is going to be a full moon. The best time to view it is supposed to be right after sunset. It’s called the Hunter’s Moon. It is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon. It will have an almost orange glow. It got its name from allowing the hunters a few more hours to see game in open fields.
Have you ever noticed the widow’s walks on top of some of the historic homes in beautiful Marietta and along the Ohio River? Two of the most well known homes with a widow’s walk in our area are The Anchorage in Marietta and the 1867 John O’Neal house near Belpre and Parkersburg. The history of the widow’s walk along the Ohio River is actually a mix of folklore and reality. Legend has it that these rooftop platforms or rooms were built so wives of rivermen or sea captains on the Ohio could pace the roof and continuously watch the river in either direction for their returning husbands on steamboats and barges. More than likely though, these were added to homes here because they were originally used in the construction of coastal New England homes during the 1800s. This architectural feature was typically only included in wealthy landowners’ homes or the homes of prosperous farmers.
