I finally laid silage tarps on sections of the field. Four 50x100 foot tarps were laid for a total of 20,000 square feet that are baking and killing the w**ds underneath. I did a 5000 sq/ft test section for about two weeks and planted in zucchini, yellow squash, watermelon and pumpkins. You can see in the photo that there is still some w**d pressure along where the edge of the tarp sat. Still, this section is fairly w**d-free. The long-term goal is to move away from heavy tillage in parts of the field to protect soil health.

I am generally busy growing vegetables, but sometimes something non-vegetable growing on the farm catches my attention. L👀k at this giant mullein plant!!! It’s nearly as tall as me. 😳 I may dry the leaves for a tea blend.

I’ve struck GOLD 🌟🌟🌟…yukon gold potatoes, that is! Yukon Gold is an early season potato variety that matures in 75 to 90 days. These were planted in mid March, so right on time with 84 days in the ground. These are completely organic, with no use of chemical fertilizers or sprays. I only used a little bit of blood meal around planting time, and then I side dressed the plants using “duck water” (which is what is left over after the ducks have been swimming in their duck pond for a period of time). 😳 This was an experiment. While I’m happy with the harvest, I likely would see better results with an addition of a leaf based compost that is high in phosphorus. I also should have used a broad fork at planting time to loosen the soil a bit more. Still, overall very happy. 😃

Thank you…thank you very much!
