A small-town general store with a little bit of everything-made in Maine goods, old-school candy, locally crafted pottery, and a curated selection of organic teas. Machias River General is a locally owned and operated old fashioned general store. Located in the heart of downtown Machias, Maine, we're proud to keep the spirit of a true general store alive. Originally a hardware store beginning in the 1890's, to more recently known as the Machias Hardware Store (est. 1950), We reopened (Machias River General Store) in 2019 with a deep respect for the past-right down to the original oiled wood floors. We carry a wide variety of goods you won't find in modern chain stores: handmade Maine-made products, classic penny candy, local pottery, hand-operated kitchen tools, cast iron cookware, eco friendly kitchenware, and foods from around the world. We've also expanded our natural food section to include bulk herbs, grains, spices, candy, dried fruits, local honey, local maple syrup, local coffee and a selection of organic teas and products. Whether you're a local or just passing through, stop by 25 Main Street, Machias-we'd love to see you!
