Let's talk about cantaloupe! 🍈

Did you know the melon we recognize as cantaloupe in the U.S. is called “reticulated muskmelon”? The North American muskmelon has netted skin and a strong scent. However, the true cantaloupe has ribbed pale green skin and looks very different from the cantaloupe we all know.

Let's not cause any confusion, so we will refer to the muskmelon as cantaloupe for the purpose of some fun facts about cantaloupes.

▪️Cantaloupes are the most popular types of melon in the United States.
▪️About 90% of cantaloupes are grown in California, Arizona, and Texas.
▪️Americans eat an average of 27 pounds of melons per year, and 8.7 pounds Worldwide.
▪️The United States is one of the largest consumers of melons.
▪️Cantaloupes can be consumed fresh and are often used in fruit salads, sorbets, smoothies, and ice-creams.
▪️These melons are named after the town of Cantalupo, Italy.
▪️It usually takes the melon 90 days for the fruit to develop after planting.
▪️Cantaloupes produce dark green oval, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges on their stem.
▪️The vine of these melons can reach up to 5 feet in height.
▪️The melons only ripen on the stem.
▪️It is only 60 calories, 1.3 grams of protein, and NO fat per 1-cup serving.

What an Amazing Monday's its been! 🤩

For our Okra lovers, here's an easy recipe to try!

Garlic Roasted Okra

Ingredients

1 lb. okra***
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. sea salt
1 ½ tbsp. melted plant butter

*** Available at Toombs County Farmers Market

Instructions

Rinse the okra and dry it with a paper towel. Trim away the stem ends, and then cut it into ½ to ¾-inch pieces. Place the okra into a medium-sized mixing bowl.

In a small dish, mix together the paprika, garlic powder, and salt.
1 tsp. paprika,1 tsp. garlic powder,½ tsp. sea salt

Sprinkle the seasoning mix over the okra and add the melted butter. Mix everything well.
1 ½ tbsp. melted plant butter

Transfer the okra to a large parchment paper-lined baking sheet and spread them out evenly.

Bake the okra for about 15 minutes at 450°F.

Serve and enjoy!
