We’re just over a week away from Halloween and while most trick or treaters will expect some fun-sized bags of corn syrup and palm oil, why not pick up a bag of Little Flower Caramels from Milkfarm? They can be an adults only treat for the person facilitating a kid-focused, multi-costume Halloween weekend.

Made by our good pals at Little Flower, these salty/sweet treats are handmade just down the street in Pasadena. Wonderfully chewy and not too sweet, these caramels are a delight for young and old. As round and (almost) as large as its namesake, Wagon Wheel is a home state cheese. It comes to us from Cowgirl Creamery up in Sonoma County!

This medium-firm alpine cheese is perfect for anything melty: grilled cheeses, fondue, gratins, even pizza. In fact, it was developed originally as a pizza cheese for acclaimed San Francisco restaurant Zuni Cafe. It’s also a great option for cheese boards, particularly if you’re serving kids; the soft, creamy, lightly savory character is perfect for anyone who wants a cheese to share the spotlight instead of jumping to center stage.

The OG is back! This red wax-coated beauty comes to us from Belgium, where Kaasafineurs Van Tricht produces some of the best Gouda-style cheeses out there.

Sporting a bright orange paste and a bevy of tyrosine crystals, OG Kristal tastes exactly like how an aged Gouda should taste: sweet and savory, with notes of toasted cashews, booze-soaked cherries, and butterscotch. This is the perfect cheese for a single option cheese board…it’ll be hard to find someone that doesn’t love this stuff!

From one of Spain’s greatest culinary ambassadors comes one of Spain’s greatest snacks! If you need an impressive appetizer for your next party, grab a box of Jose Andres Croquetas with Iberico!

A traditional tapa that exists in various forms across the globe (maybe you’ve tried them at Porto’s?), croquetas were created as a way to use up leftovers, by mixing thick béchamel sauce and scraps of whatever meat was served for dinner into a batter. The batter is fried into delicate fritters that can be found at croqueterías across Spain. It makes sense that Chef Andres would produce some spectacular oven-ready croquetas; nobody knows how to bring Spanish cuisine to the masses better than Jose.

Vegan snackers, your dreams of a high-quality meat-free salami are coming true! Milkfarm’s excited to have a restock of vegan salamis from Renegade Meats.

These salamis are made up in Sonoma with traditional charcuterie techniques like smoking and fermentation. While they’re not a complete replica of a sauccison sec or your favorite soppresata, they are delicious, packed with the strong flavors and salty, savory bite of a traditional salami. Even meat eaters will dig these; they’re made with wheat gluten and lots of highly flavored ingredients: think koji, miso, nutritional yeast and dried mushroom powder.

Right now we have the Smoky Soppresata and Sweet Toscana varieties in our grab and go fridge. Be sure to pick up a wheel of Rebel vegan cheese to serve alongside!

Get excited for today’s Meet the Maker at Milkfarm! We’ll be hosting our pals from Nectar+Peel; stop by to try their whole fruit preserves.

Handmade on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, these preserves are whole, intact pieces of fruit, not a puree like most fruit preserves you’ve seen. Aside from looking handsome in their clear glass jars, keeping the fruit whole preserves the texture and an incredible depth of flavor.

We carry the figs and cherry tomatoes, both swimming in jars of delicate sugar syrup. BUT! If you stop by today, you can try some bonus offerings, including Nectar+Peel’s preserved cherries, green olives, and bergamot peel! Have you ever had sugar preserved olives? You gotta try them!

Cantal is back! One of our most requested French cheeses has returned! Get it while you can!

Crumbly, buttery, and sporting a dramatic, mite-ravaged rind, Cantal is one of France’s oldest cheeses, dating to Gallic times. Made only during the months of November through April, Cantal milk comes from hay-fed Salers cows (Salers cheese is basically Cantal made in the spring and summer).

Don’t tell any Englishmen, but there’s a passing similarity between Cantal and a well-aged Clothbound cheddar. They both sport similar crumbly textures and are celebrations of cave aging, both sporting pockmarked rinds and earthy flavor notes. Cantal stands out with its richness and bright milky flavor. This wheel is considered an Entre-Deaux wheel, meaning it’s been aged for 3-7 months, adding a bit of nuttiness to offset the tang.

Shave onto a baguette with butter, cornichons and ham for a spin on Jambon beurre, or just enjoy as is, alongside a chilled Gamay and some seeded crackers.

While there’s probably going to be a few more warm days this year (blehhh), these cool nights have us thinking about one thing: RACLETTE! The famous dish of broiled cheese scraped onto potatoes, pickles, and ham is a cold weather classic, one of the yummiest ways to eat a bunch of cheese while keeping warm and cozy.

And after a long absence, we’ve finally acquired a wheel of Jumi’s Port and Peppercorn Raclette! Studded with peppercorns and given a splash of port, this cheese is one of Jumi’s rectangular raclettes, perfectly shaped for slicing and broiling. Made with raw cow milk in the Emmental, this Swiss Raclette is even nice as is, sliced into matchsticks for a cheeseboard or sliced and served unmelted on a turkey sandwich.

Gotta love that artwork! Be sure to check out any other Jumi cheeses that make their way to our cheese case.

Landrauchschinken: tricky to say, easy to love! There’s all sorts of ham in this crazy world, but if you can find one with a more satisfying name to pronounce, let us know.

Landrauchschinken is Olympia Provisions’ take on a Swiss country smoked ham. A nicely marbled pork loin, fat cap and all, is brined for over two weeks, then gets a soak in a burnt sugar solution. The marinated loins are coated with rosemary and juniper before getting smoked over apple and hickory wood.

The end result is a luscious hunk of ham that’s a bit like a porky pastrami: herbaceous, smoky and tender, perfect for sandwiches but irresistible by the slice. Try some griddled up next to some eggs or dice and crisp up next time you sauté some Brussel sprouts.

Happy Challerween! For one month of the year, the Challerhocker cellar dweller we all know and love transforms into an even creepier creature for All Hallows Eve. Those red eyes may be terrifying, but the cheese beneath them is anything but.

As many customers already know, Challerhocker is an incredibly tasty alpine cheese from Switzerland. Made by the one and only Walter Rass in Lüitsburg, Switzerland, this cheese has become a modern classic, as beloved by cheese aficionados as ancient wheels like Gruyère or Appenzeller.

Rest assured, the label is the only thing scary about this wheel of Challerhocker. Beneath the spooky faces lies a nutty, sweet, salty, sharp, buttery cheese that really is an all-purpose classic. Cook with it, snack on it, keep it on hand all year long!

This is a late post to wish our awesome Cheesemonger David Garcia A HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY! 🎂💝🎉💐🎁

On top of being a wonderful Milkfarm Cheesemonger, David also runs our social media- writing thoughtful, well-written, informative posts about our products, producers, and cheesemakers. We love having his kind and friendly presence in the shop. Just look at that smile, he can really light up any room with his warm personality☺️

A true Angeleno, you’ll always see him sporting a Dodgers or Lakers cap at work. Outside of work you can bet he’s got headphones on, listening to his favorite bands; If you’re lucky, you can catch him drumming a beat on his leg or singing (put on Mr. Jones by Counting Crows if you want on-demand vocals🙂).

David loves apple pie 🥧 with full top and bottom pie crust of course (get that crumble topping outta here), one of his favorite foods is mac & cheese (can’t wait to get his official ranking on the 10+ boxes he received), and can recite most of the movie Nacho Libre. Coming from a family of veterinarians, he also has a soft spot for cats and dogs.

Some of the best crackers we’ve ever tried are made right here in LA! A relatively new product on our shelves, these beautifully crunchy oat and seed crisps are handmade and addictively snacky.

These irresistible crisps were made by our friend Dana, the mastermind behind The Cultivated Cook! She makes her crisps (and granola!) in her home kitchen in Encino, using an LA County Cottage Food License. These licenses are a great way for a cook to start a small business without the costs associated with a traditional kitchen space.

She’s also famous for granola! Dana makes a couple varieties that change seasonally. We’ll have samples of her new fall flavors: Fig and Pumpkin Spice and Apple Crisp!

If you’d like to taste these delicious snacks, stop by Milkfarm tomorrow! From 11-2, Dana will be here sampling and greeting the adoring public. Hope to see you this weekend!

This is a Raclette, pungent and made for melting, that’s absolutely packed with garlic! Not only is fresh garlic infused into the milk, there are little nubs of black garlic dotted throughout the paste. Sure to protect your cheese case from all manner of vampyrs, werwulfs, and vvitches.

Try some melted over a burger, broiled over cauliflower or just sliced on crackers for a real garlic kick.

There’s a new olive at Milkfarm…..olive lovers, heed this caption! Smoked Kalamata olives are now at Milkfarm!

Named for the city of Kalamata in Peloponnese, Greece, Kalamata olives are some of the most popular in Europe, enjoyed for their meaty texture and rich, fruity flavor. These particular Kalamatas have been smoked before getting jarred in brine, lending them a woodsy oomph that really makes them stand out on a relish tray.

Sprinkle a few whole over a salad, skewer with a swizzle stick to garnish a cocktail, or braise along with some w**e and chicken thighs for a punchy, lightly smoky stewed chicken dinner.

One of Milkfarm’s cult favorites is back in the cheese case: Dorstone! For certain Milkfarm customers, this cheese is an automatic, on sight purchase, and we can’t blame them! Dorstone is a cheese lover’s cheese, and something that’s hardly ever seen on the West Coast.

As you can tell by their gray color, these little goat cheeses are ash coated. The ash helps the swirly, brainy Geotricum candidum fungi flourish, creating a thin rind that will eventually host a bevy of multicolored microorganisms. In the pics above, the rinds are only partially formed; they still a few more days in the cave before they can be offered to the cheese-loving public.

Check out these pics of Leah meeting the one and only Charlie Westhead. One of the first employees at Neal’s Yard Dairy, Charlie developed the recipe for Dorstone back in the mid-90s. Enjoy this cheese as Charlie would, sliced into coins and drizzled with honey on crackers.

There may not be a full moon out tonight, but enjoy this pic of a full wheel of Gubbeen! What a pretty cheese. This Irish stunner is sporting some ridges from the aging rack and a gorgeous pale orange color. Very October coded.

Made by Gianna Ferguson and a team of dedicated cheese professionals, Gubbeen is a semi-firm washed rind cheese made at Gubbeen Farm in Cork County, Ireland. Expect a supple, fudgy bite with notes of mushrooms and freshly picked flowers.

Fun fact for all the microbiology fans out there: a 2001 article in Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology identified a strain of bacteria found ONLY on Gubbeen Farm. It was named in honor of the farm and the cheese: microbacterium gubbeenense. While these kind of site-specific microorganisms are found in cheese caves and dairy farms across the globe, microbacterium gubbeenense helps make Gubbeen a one of a kind wheel of cheese. Someone must have cast a heat spell, because this weekend certainly isn’t very autumnal. Could it have been…the OLD WITCH!? 🧙‍♀️

Probably not. Old Witch is a bold, luscious alpine cheese made in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. It’s the older sister of another bewitching cheese, Red Witch. Both cheeses begin life the same way, but after four months of aging, certain Red Witch wheels are set aside to age for an extra four months. After their extended stay in the cave, wheels of Old Witch are still nicely pudgy, but they develop a delicate sprinkle of tyrosine throughout the paste and a bit of stink on the rind.

Old Witch is perfect for fondue, gratins, and all sorts of similarly melty dishes. It would be also make a phenomenal cheeseburger, ideally one topped with caramelized onions, pickles, and some spicy aioli.

Today’s the last day to get your hands on some of LA’s best pretzels at Milkfarm! In celebration of Oktoberfest, we’re going to have freshly baked pretzels from our friend Colleen. We’ve been offering these for the last few Saturdays and they’re always a hit!

Colleen is a baker extraordinaire and her pretzels are some of the best we’ve ever had. She adds Guinness and brown sugar to the dough, which doesn’t make them sweet but does give the pretzels a burnished exterior, and a complex, caramelized character. All you need is a swipe of mustard and you’ve got a snack that would make Auntie Anne weep. Pick up some tall boys and some brats and you got an at-home Oktoberfest for the ages.

Just in time for another (!?!) SoCal heat wave, we’d like to introduce our new FREEZER!

A long time dream of Leah’s, we now have two retail freezers in the shop! Our newest addition has been designated the official savory freezer, stocked with stuff that can be transformed into a meal with minimal prep.

We have an assortment of frozen meals from Domenico’s, including their ready to bake lasagna and eggplant parm. We’ve also begun carrying some delicious pierogi from Matka! Made up in Humboldt County, these pierogi are cheesy, filling and a delight for young and old. Just pan fry in some butter, toss together a salad, and dinner is done. The potato cheese is a classic, but try the jalapeño cheddar for a bit of a kick.

Be sure to check out this new section of the store! We’ll be keeping it well stocked with fun, yummy things for you to enjoy. Peep into our original freezer for frozen sweet treats!
