INGREDIENTS
1 lb. lean beef, minced
1 tsp. onion powder
1 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. dried garlic powder
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (GF works too)
TOMATO SAUCE
1/2 white onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, grated
1 can crushed Italian tomatoes
2 tbsp. tomato paste
1 tbsp. fresh oregano or 1 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 cup basil leaves and extra to garnish
1 cup Saint Angel Triple Cream Cheese, broken into small 1/2 in. cubes
DIRECTIONS
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the beef, onion, garlic, salt, oregano, egg, and breadcrumbs until evenly distributed.
Place 1 tablespoon of mixture into your hands and roll using the palms until smooth and compacted. Place on a plate and repeat with remaining mixture.
Add to an air fryer and cook at 200C/395F for 8-9 minutes or 180C/355F for 15-18 minutes in the oven.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick fry pan. Add the onion and sauté until translucent. Add the garlic, tomatoes, and paste. Cook on medium high heat until simmering. Add the oregano and basil, and then turn it down to low, cover, and cook 10 minutes until thick.
Add the meatballs, mix well to coat and then cook for another 5 minutes, covered.
Top with the cheese, allow to melt and serve with extra basil.
