As of 12 May 2026, PCOS has officially been renamed PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) following an 11 year international consensus process, with the proposal published in The Lancet.
The change reflects something many women, clinicians, and researchers have recognised for years:
PCOS was never just about the ovaries.
The term “polycystic” has long been criticised because the so called cysts are not actually cysts at all. They are follicles, which are a normal part of ovarian function.
The new name acknowledges the broader hormonal and metabolic drivers that often sit behind the symptoms, including insulin resistance, inflammation, disrupted ovulation, and hormonal imbalance.
While PMOS may not be a perfect name, it is arguably a more accurate one.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
