After two days in mail trucks from Pennsylvania, our first batch of 25 chicks arrived yesterday February 13. In 6 months or so I expect these pullets to start laying their dark brown eggs. Speaking of eggs, we have plenty of fresh Hammond Eggs on hand right now.

In spite of consistent cold weather, we have been busily preparing for our 2026 season. Our first batch of pullet chicks arrive this week and the rest of our meat bird and egg laying chicks were ordered in December for staggered spring and summer delivery.

Prior to refrigerated transportation, large flocks were “trotted” 10 miles per day to market. Lead turkeys wore bells to help herders track them. Corn scattered along the route kept the birds moving.

Our fresh, local turkeys are $4.75 a pound. Other things comparable in price at Walmart: Doritos, $5.94, 14.5 oz., Oreos, $4.97, 18 oz., Oscar Mayer classic weiners, $4.94 lb. Of course, you can't anchor a once yearly family dinner with 20 lb. of any of those items.

Today and tomorrow I will have honey from this year's harvest at our stand. You can see the light color, but you can't see the light, floral flavor. Pints are $15 and 12oz. jars are $12.

The turkeys are 5 weeks old today and weigh about 4 pounds. Today I moved them to their new shelter. We have 23 and they are doing very well. I'm expecting finished, dressed weights to be 16 to 21 lb by Thanksgiving week.
