Starting a new Saturday weekly post featuring a farmstand all-local recipe to highlight easy, seasonal, locally sourced meals. Today’s dinner is thanks to:

🐖Pork sausage from H+J Cattle Co.
🥬 🥕🥔Kale, potatoes, carrots & squash from EGY Farms organically grown
🥛Cream from Cedar-Ridge Creamery, LLC
🐓 Pasture raised chicken turned to bone broth raised from H +J’s farm store McGees Pastured Meats
🌿Herbs from the garden

Most of these items didn’t even cost any more than getting them at the grocery store but all the support goes to the local farmers. In return you are also getting a more fresh/nutrient dense food source and the transparency of where/how it was grown or made.

A neighbor just dropped off freshly picked WILD blackberries to the stand - 1.5 pints/$10. Just like you remember picking as a kid, the kind that can’t compare when you make blackberry pie!

These are in the blueberry cooler at the stand today.

Cedar Ridge Creamery is a self serve farmstand ~ 7 minutes drive from us that sells fresh milk + raw cream right here in Leesville.

We used the fresh cream to make butter in the Kitchenaid mixer (let it sit at room temp first), added 3-4 tbs of chopped herbs from the garden & sea salt for the most delicious addition to homemade bread and H+J Cattle Co. filet!

1 quart of cream makes about a pound of butter & leaves about 1.5 cups of buttermilk, which is delicious in pancakes + muffins! It took us 12-14 minutes to make butter on the medium low setting on the mixer. Before becoming butter, it is whipped cream then will slowly start to separate.

In April the sheep were sheared and our fiber artist friend Michelle came to collect wool to turn into yarn. While she was here, she taught the process of wet felting - using soap, water & friction to felt.

The kids made some beautiful projects by felting in colored wool together. Even my 3 year old was able to understand the process - highly recommend trying this as an art form for any age! (Check out stories for videos)

A secondary use of some wool that didn’t make the cut to become yarn was around tomato plants - wool can be both a slow release fertilizer + moisture retaining mulch. So far our experiment is showing that the tomato plants with wool around them are much healthier & bigger but I’ll report back. 😅
