How we got here….the year is 1995, and Mark and Barbara Zigmond, (over)worked in finance, decided to make the 12 hour flight from New Jersey to visit Mark’s sister Beverly on the laid-back island of Lanai. We decompressed for two weeks in the Manele Bay Hotel, then impulsively decided we could live here, i.e. at the hotel, with room service, housekeeping and umbrella drinks served pool side. A sob

ering analysis of our finances indicated that we were unlikely to become full-time residents at a luxury hotel. We agreed to a more realistic aspiration: putting down roots in Lanai City. In the summer of 1996, we loaded up the truck (a la Beverly Hillbillies), drove across the US, shipped the truck across the pond and found our corner of paradise in Lanai City. In December, 1996, we opened Pele’s Other Garden, a health food deli, connected to Pele’s Garden, the health food store (owned by Beverly). We served no meat, organic produce, homemade hummu,…way ahead of the health food curve. It did not last, so we quickly decided to become a New York-style deli, serving quality meats and cheeses and the freshest made-to-order sandwiches this side of New York City. Pele’s added a dinner menu featuring Italian fare and a bistro setting in March, 2001. Finally-- awesome bruschetta, fresh NY-style pizza and tasty Chicken Parmesan come to Lanai! All that was missing was a nice bottle of Chianti, so we jumped through the hoops to become the only restaurant (apart from those in Lanai’s three hotels) with a liquor license. Now, an impressive wine list, full bar and 12 draught beers complete the Pele’s Other Garden menu.
