The bees are busy right now! 🐝🍯

Brazilian pepper is blooming heavily across South Lakeland, and it’s giving our bees one of the best nectar flows we’ve seen this year. For those who aren’t beekeepers, a “nectar flow” simply means there’s so much nectar available that the bees are bringing it into the hive faster than usual and turning it into honey.

Today, all but one of our hives needed another honey box added to give the bees more room to store what they’re bringing in.

If this flow keeps up, we should have a beautiful fall honey crop coming.

If you keep bees in South Florida, you know what’s coming.

Our second big nectar flow of the year is about to kick off, and one of the biggest players in that fall flow is Brazilian pepper.

I took this photo yesterday, and you can see it’s just about ready. Once it opens up, honey bees will absolutely work it. For many parts of Central and South Florida, Brazilian pepper is one of the most important fall nectar sources we have.

Now, to be clear, Brazilian pepper is an invasive plant in Florida. That part matters. But from a beekeeping standpoint, it can provide a major nectar flow at a time when a lot of other sources have slowed down. That helps colonies bring in nectar, put on stores, and gives beekeepers a real shot at a strong fall honey crop.

When the Florida heat turns up, the bees turn on the air conditioning. 🐝

These workers are fanning their wings to cool the hive, move fresh air inside, and help evaporate moisture from incoming nectar as it becomes honey.

And standing nearby, the air smells absolutely incredible. Warm honey, fresh nectar, and a strong colony hard at work.

Nature never stops amazing me.

Busy bees coming and going on this beautiful June afternoon in Lakeland.

Queen bee doing what she does best. The blue dot was placed on her by me so I can easily spot her in the hive. This is one of the busiest times of the year for the colony, and if all goes well, we should have some fresh honey ready soon!

Hello, it’s David here, owner of Florida Pestworx.

Most people know me as your local bug guy here in Lakeland. But what many don’t realize is that I’m also a backyard beekeeper with my boys through My2Sons Bee & Honey Co.

That perspective changes everything for me.

When you’ve stood there with your son holding a frame full of bees, watching them work, tasting honey straight from the comb… you start to understand just how important it is to do things the right way.

Pest control isn’t about wiping everything out. It’s about balance. It’s about protecting your home and your family while being intentional with how we treat the environment around it.

Every product we use, every treatment we perform, every decision we make on your property carries weight. And that’s something I take very seriously.

Because the same environment we’re treating is the one supporting pollinators like these. And without them, none of this works.

So today’s a good reminder. You can protect your home and still respect the world around you. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to every single day.

We have a special visitor at the apiary this week. My buddy Joseph Crayton made the trip down from Clarksburg, WV, and it didn’t take long for the bees at My2Sons to welcome him in. Got him right into the hive and let him try honey straight off the comb for the first time. Doesn’t get much better than that.
