Did you know that even fruits and vegetables with a skin or rind you do not plan to consume, like melons, need to be washed before you cut and serve them?

According to our friends at MSU Extension, "Rinse produce even if you plan to peel it before eating. Bacteria present on the outside of produce such as melons and squash can be transferred to the inside when you slice, cut, or peel them."

Are you drowning in an abundance of farmers market fresh apples? If stored correctly in a cool place (32-40 degrees), apples can last as long as a month.

Just remember to wash your fresh apples under cool running water before enjoying in a recipe or biting right in!

What varieties are in your market tote this week?

According to our friends at MSU Extension, more than one billion pounds of Michigan apples are harvested each and every year. If you're interested in preserving Michigan farmers market fresh apples to enjoy all winter long but don't have access to canning equipment, look no further than your freezer!

To safety freeze apples, start by washing, peeling, and coring firm, fresh apples. Cut them into 12-16 pieces depending on the size of the fruit.

Next, dissolve one half teaspoon ascorbic acid in 3 tablespoons water and sprinkle the mixture over the slices. Line slices on a clean tray and freeze slices individually before packing them into containers once hardened. This extra step makes it easy to unpack just the quantity you need when it's time to use them!

The beauty and abundance of peak market season makes it one of the most wonderful times of the year!

If your market bag is overflowing with ripe fruits and vegetables, consider preserving what you won't eat ASAP to enjoy later. Depending on the product, canning, dehydrating, and freezing could all be good options. Be sure to follow all safe handling and preserving guidelines for the specific produce item you're using to keep away harmful bacteria.

If you're not sure the best way to preserve something, talk to the vendor you're shopping with or with MSU Extension to learn more.

When shopping for chicken eggs at a Michigan farmers market, you might see eggs that are white, brown, or even blue! You may wonder if one type of egg is better for sweet or savory dishes, or whether you should enjoy them boiled or baked.

According to our friends at MSU Extension, "The hen’s genetics and breeding determines the shell color of eggs. The shell color does not control the content of the egg. Eggs may be different on the outside but there is no difference in flavor or nutrition, or how one might consume them."

Feel free to enjoy eggs of all colors of the rainbow safely by keeping them refrigerated and consuming them within three weeks of purchase.
