We are slowly staggering into our CSA harvest this year 😅 a lot had to be re-planted, the recent run of 88° days really pressured the spring crops, volunteer plants are popping up EVERYWHERE and making a mess...

But here we are! Finally put a small harvest out on our 'almost-finished' roadside stand!

Romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, spring mix, peas, sugar snap peas

Wow! Our spring cover crop is doing fantastic! This is a blend of oats, field peas, red clover and mustard... and has many purposes!

Oats are fast growing, and create a canopy that smothers out w**ds. The peas are a nitrogen fixator and can improve soil health significantly. They are supported by the oats. The combination is easy to terminate and adds organic matter to the soil quickly.

Mustard grows a deep taproot, helping to break up compaction and bring nutrients to the surface. The flowers attract pollinators. Upon termination, if the foliage is tilled into the soil it acts as a natural pesticide and can naturally sterilize soil for future crops.

Red clover adds a lot of nitrogen into the soil, and grows fast helping with early w**d suppression. Complex root system helps prevent erosion.

I have personally noticed that in just 3 rounds of cover cropping, w**d presence has dropped by at least 60%, closer to 90%+ if you do not consider native grasses. I think it's pretty cool, myself 😎

Super amazing cauliflower transplants went in the ground yesterday!

This year was the first year... FINALLY!!!.... that I used homemade seed starter!!! It's super fluffy, made with lots of aged compost. The seedlings say it is superb 👌

The hoop house and the no-till garden are both fully planted as of a week ago! Both got a heavy dose of gorgeous homemade compost, which also got utilized in my first ever HOMEMADE SEED STARTER!! 🤩

The big main garden is very very close to becoming a no-till as well! Despite all the green around us and in adjacent fields, this plot STILL didn't have much popping up as far as grass, dandelions or other w**ds. At all! The soil is also very soft to walk on.

I took a tow-behind disc over the surface yesterday so it can be seeded with an organic spring-blend cover crop today. We are supposed to get rain for 3 days, so this should create a very quick germination.
