Ultra Processed Foods currently make up 60% or more of the average American caloric intake.
Americas industrial food system is heavily shaped by agricultural monocultures, particularly those centered on corn, soy, and wheat, which receive substantial government subsidies through mechanisms such as the U.S. Farm Bill.
This nexus has contributed to an overabundance of seed oils in the food supply, widespread glyphosate residues, and the introduction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through the application of biosolids as fertilizer.
PFAS contamination follows a persistent environmental cycle: industrial discharges enter water systems, which then irrigate or contaminate agricultural land, ultimately transferring these “forever chemicals” into the food chain.
The US is facing chronic disease rates, declining fertility (evidenced by halved s***m counts since the 1970s, earlier puberty, and increasing endocrine disorders)
Americans desperately need to take back control of their food systems.
Build and support local food systems, disrupt the trajectory of industrialized agriculture, educate and promote the future generations of stewards. One kitchen at a time.
The path forward lies not in moralizing or conspiracy framing, but in pragmatically altering the rules of the system while constructing more resilient alternatives alongside it. 🌊🌀
