Basics Cooperative is a natural foods store in Janesville, WI. Founded in 1977, Basics became a member-owned co-op in 2005...which means we are 100% owned by our community! Everyone is welcome to shop at Basics, but Owners do get to vote on important store issues, vote and/or join the Board of Directors, receive many extra discounts, and become part of our legacy of cooperation, community support

and wellness for all! We are dedicated to providing valuable, healthy choices to our community - with the best customer service around! To us, natural foods are whole foods that are as pure and minimally processed as we can find them—with as little as possible removed and with nothing artificial added. All foods and vitamins at Basics are free of artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. We also encourage sustainable, organic agricultural practices and support local farms and vendors as often as possible. You are making a difference every day with the choices that you make. We look forward to serving you even better in the future!

Announcing Madison Magazine’s 2026 Chef of the Year …

✨ Patrick O’Halloran of The Deliciouser ✨

O'Halloran is charting a new course with his modern spice shop and restaurant The Deliciouser. More than 30 years into his career — which includes his work at legendary Madison restaurants Lombardino’s and The Old Fashioned — O’Halloran is using curiosity as his compass to trace the histories, techniques and traditions behind cuisines from around the world.

Also in this issue, Emma Waldinger highlights six chefs — all 32 or younger — who are laying the groundwork for a healthier and more sustainable culinary industry in Madison.

Ashley Knipschield at Pasture and Plenty
Drew Eckenrod at Ahan
Kasey Lee Cooke at Mint Mark
Chance Spivey at Canter Inn
Elijah Hipke at REAP Food Group
Katie Ankowicz at Kin Kitchen

Plus, Sam Zwick has a taste of Giovanni Novella's Italy at Osteria Novella, Denise S. Robbins finds her way back to the cello, and Jeff Oloizia provides a glimpse of the World Naked Bike Ride in Madison.

On newsstands June 3. Single issue orders are now live at madisonmagazine.com.

🍄‍🟫🍽️😋We have a “shroomie” situation on our hands—and we need your help to clear the shelves! Our mushrooms are at their peak flavor right now, and we don’t want a single one to go to waste. Head over to today, grab a few boxes (or four!), and let’s make sure these beauties find a home on your dinner table instead of the compost pile.
