Congratulations!
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) is pleased to announce that the Houston Farmers Market has been recognized as a Mississippi Certified Farmers Market for 2026.
As a Mississippi Certified Farmers Market (CFM), your market demonstrates a commitment to offering high-quality products while serving as a vital connection between farmers, consumers, growing seasons, and the local community. Certified farmers markets play an important role in strengthening local food systems and supporting Mississippi agriculture.
One of the key benefits of participating in the CFM program is promotional support provided by MDAC. In 2024, MDAC launched the inaugural Mississippi Farmers Market Week to celebrate the impact of farmers markets across the state. This year, Mississippi Farmers Market Week will be held July 5–11, 2026, recognizing the dedication of our farmers, market managers, volunteers, and staff who work tirelessly to provide communities with access to fresh, locally grown food.
Another valuable benefit of certification is the sales tax exemption available to vendors selling Mississippi-grown produce (grown by the vendor) and home-processed food products (made by the vendor) at an MDAC-certified farmers market. These products are exempt from state sales tax, providing an added incentive for both vendors and consumers.
Certified Farmers Markets are distinguished by their commitment to providing fresh, local, and healthy food options for Mississippians. Most importantly, certification helps strengthen the relationship between farmers and consumers while highlighting the importance of locally grown food and supporting Mississippi’s number one industry, agriculture.
Thank you for the hard work and dedication that you and your staff invest in creating opportunities for local farmers to market their products and for consumers to purchase fresh, nutritious, and high-quality fruits, vegetables, and other locally produced goods.
