Mincemeat or Mince Pies have been associated with Christmas for centuries. One hundred years ago, for instance, they were a staple of Thanksgiving and Holiday meals here in the United States. Currants are oftentimes one of the fruits added to mince pies. For example, an 1832 cookbook published in Charleston, South Carolina, included currants in their recipe for mince meat, along with beef suet and roast beef (see recipe in the comments).
Here in the South, we have a few native trees that are occasionally called a Currant Tree. You’re probably more likely to recognize them, however, by the name Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.). Although serviceberries turn dark purple to purplish-red at maturity, they’re not the same “currant” as the ones used in mincemeat pies. That honor belongs to the Zante Currant or Black Corinth Grape (Vitis vinifera) of Europe.
