🐄 Farm Fact Friday... June Dairy Month Edition 🐄
Dairy cows are working girls. Their purpose is to produce milk. But, did you know that their work day is only about 10 minutes long each day?! 🤯
⏰ Here at Linden Hall, we milk our cows twice a day. Each time takes just about 5 minutes.
⏰ 1-2 hours a day, as needed, are dedicated for herd management care. This includes situations us humans put them through, such as veterinarian checks, hoof trimming, moving them to and from the pasture, holding area while they wait to be milked, etc.
⏰ 2-3 hours are for socializing and moving around. They walk around with their herd-mates and drink water during this time.
⏰ 3-5 hours are spent eating. Cows eat all throughout the day, averaging around 9-14 meals.
⏰ In between their meals, they spend 6-8+ hours ruminating, or regurgitating and chewing their food again to break it down further, generally while they are laying down.
⏰ 10-14 hours are for resting. While cows spend the majority of their day laying down, they only spend about 4 hours actually sleeping. This is why we put so much thought into the comfort of our cows' housing facilities!
Can you imagine a work schedule where you only had to clock in for 10 minutes a day?!
