A Plateau of Color..... All Things of Autumn by Joyce Kebless Sassafras Hutch Herb Farm...... Part 1

Fall can be seen as a second Spring or Indian Summer.....Temperatures are cooler and rain more frequent, it brings a resurgence of life and added blooms to our gardens. It sets the stage for a splendid 3rd act of a favorite play.

The leaves of trees, plants, and shrubs bring a frenzied crescendo of colors. It can turn our garden into a science of bright Fiery Reds, Oranges, Yellow and Gold.

Plants that are showy in the fall you can now build a new plateau of lots of supporting plants, accented with color, color and more color.

Do you have a focal point using a special shrub or colorful tree?

Consider a Black Gum Tree for a early blaze of Orange, Yellow, and Maroon. zone 3-9. needs full sun.

Don't forget the striking fall color of flowering Dogwood with its Gold and Red leaves along with the Crimson Foliage.

My favorite Tree ---Japanese Maple, one called Bloodgood. The volume of its Red leaves turns up the bright Scarlet hue. It also makes a nice small lawn tree. zones 5-8

Sassafras our native tree and name of our farm with 3 different leaves on one plant. Has brilliant shades of Orange and Scarlet.

The Sugar Maples are one of the best for Autumn color. Lots of color from Yellow, Orange and Scarlet. Enjoy the colors... watch for part 2 of this article!!!!!!!!!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HERB WORLD;
Scented Geraniums also known as Pelargoniums (Stork's bill). Very popular during the Victorian Era. It is a plant you definitely need to add to your garden. The French people distilled the oils for their perfume industry. Aside from the Scent it has unusual textures, color of the plant can vary from green to dusty gray. The plant likes full sun, mulching and just regular care.

USES: PERFUMES, PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS, SYRUPS, TEAS, COOKIES, PUNCHES AND TEAS. It is a wonderful plant for children to rub its leaves and smell their fragrance. It is a great pollinator plant. The flowers are small and the colors vary from White, Mauve, or Lavender with special dark markings with an elegance all its own.

Our limited supply includes: Attar of Roses, Citrodrum, Concolor of Lace, Lady Plymouth, Lemon, Lime, Nutmeg, Orange Frizz, Peppermint Rose, Sweet Minosa and Mosquito (not edible).

Learn more by signing up for our class about the
this beautiful herb.

Another special herb plant is the Bay Tree. This is the culinary herb variety for every chef's delight. We will have a limited supply.

We are looking for a few part time gardeners to help with grooming our herb beds and at the same time learning about the
benefits of the wonderful world of edible herbs. [email protected]
