We Grew Up Different If you drank from the hose,
respected your parents,
and played outside till the streetlights came on…
you belong here. We grew up different.

That little horse outside the store was pure magic when you were small.
Ten cents went in, the machine started rocking, and for two glorious minutes you weren’t standing on a sidewalk anymore — you were a cowboy, a race champion, a hero riding off into the sunset while your parent stood there holding the groceries and smiling.
Nobody needed flashing screens or fancy entertainment. Just a wobbly metal horse, a squeaky motor, and a kid with an imagination big enough to turn a grocery trip into an adventure.
Simple little rides like that didn’t last long…
But somehow, we remembered them forever.

Looking presentable didn’t happen by accident.
It took time.
It took effort.
And in a whole lot of homes, it took an ironing board, a hot iron, and that old glass bottle full of water sitting close by.
Mothers sprinkled shirts, pressed collars, smoothed out dresses, and made sure the family walked out the door looking neat for church, school, pictures, or even just a trip into town.
Nobody called it a “life skill” back then.
It was just part of taking pride in yourself.

A lot of people today act like hearing “no” somehow ruins a child, but most of us were raised by parents who understood that boundaries were part of love. They didn’t say yes to everything, they didn’t explain themselves for an hour, and they certainly didn’t feel guilty for expecting respect.
We didn’t always like it in the moment either. We pouted, stomped off, crossed our arms, and thought life was unfair. But looking back, those little disappointments taught us some of the biggest lessons — patience, self-control, gratitude, and the understanding that not every want turns into a right.
The truth is, a strong parent wasn’t the one who gave in all the time. It was the one who cared enough to stand firm, even when it made them unpopular for a while. And for a whole lot of us, that kind of upbringing didn’t hurt us… it helped shape us.
