New TN bill passes that aims to protect bears and people.

Effective July 1, 2026: New Tennessee Senate Bill 2597 makes it a Class B misdemeanor to intentionally feed black bears in designated areas with posted notices. This bill allows the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to partner with local law enforcement to impose minimum $250 fines for violations.

Feeding bears - intentionally or unintentionally (such as leaving food or trash unsecured) results in a written warning for the first offense, with subsequent offenses resulting in fines of at least $250.

In Great Smoky Mountains National Park federal law prohibits feeding wildlife with fines up to $5,000 and six-months in jail.

Intentionally feeding bears or allowing them to find anything that smells or tastes like food teaches bears to approach homes and people looking for more which risks not only your safety but theirs.

Remember to always be BearWise and...
1. Keep a distance of 50 yards (10 car lengths) from wildlife.
2. Do not feed bears or any wildlife.
3. Secure ALL food, trash and anything with an odor in bear-resistant containers.
4. Lock doors and fully close windows and remove all food and trash from vehicles.
5. Remove bird feeders, pet food and clean grills at home.
