Great day working our cattle with lots of help from neighbors and friends.
Perfect weather day, the fog rolled in then left again.
Bear River is beautiful in the Fall.
We were checking for herd health, weaning some calves from their mamas.
And of course having a bbq to finish up the day with our crew. Michelle was heating up our Mac and cheese with bacon bits on the propane branding pot, while Liz bbq'd the trip tips.

We conducted our 3rd Prescribed Burn on our ranch to improve grassland health and reduce woody encroachment.
This project is a collaboration between us-Bear River Valley Beef, NRCS, and the HumCo PBA with support from CAL FIRE HUU, local community members, private fire resources, and even members of the Ventura and Mendocino PBA'S!
Smoke was visible from Mattole Road and Bear River Ridge Road.
All the HumbCo PBS burns are conducted by a diverse mix of community members, prescribed fire practitioners and fire professionals in accordance with CAL FIRE and North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District regulations.

Special thanks to our neighbors, Peggy Fox, Ani Knight, Ron & Robert Rodoni, Andrew McBride, Kenny Sanders, Mick Mangrum and Dale McDougal and Crew of Patriot Restoration Systems.
We were blessed to be able to burn in August. Without the PBA we would not have the resources to conduct this controlled burn. Our local state certified burn boss, Jeff Stackhouse, along with Henry Holbrook and Gabe Goff with UC ANR Fire Network bought the skills, organization and leadership to make this event a successful and safe burn. Our thanks to our local NRCS Staff (Natural Resource Conservation Service) in assisting us in grant funding to support our burn efforts. Our local Calfire resources were amazing for their help working with the PBA and landowners. Each day they provided an engine and handline crew to be on standby to take over and coordinate if there is an escape of fire that we cannot handle. Cafire also provide EMT members from their crew should any medical assistance be needed. Thankfully no injuries or incidents occurred with our burn project.
Our objective of the fire is to use it as a tool to restore the range back to grass range and decrease woody shrub habitat, that in many areas was almost impassable even for cattle. We look forward to seeding and watching new green grass spring up in areas we have not been able to look over in many years.
Preparation consisted of many weeks work, building dozer fire lines as fire breaks, prepping inside of unit to protect water troughs, tanks and springs from being destroyed from fire. Day 1 of the Burn was focussed on laying down the black, which means creating a large burned black buffer area. Day 2, the big burn day, creating as much fire as a head fire, burning as much area as possible within the controlled area, Day 3, continuing burn efforts in locations with dense brush, and making sure the fire was totally contained by end of day. This involved a very much appreciated Cal Fire hand line crew (Fortuna Calfire branch) coming in to put in an handline through steep and dense brush that was inaccessible by equipment.
