This is a genus of plant in the family. The same family as broccoli and cabbage. Often an alpine dweller, found above tree line in mountain ranges across the world. My partner spent years studying this genus while obtaining her Phd, tracking down populations in far reaching corners of North America, from Alaska to Arizona, from Utah and Idaho to Massachusetts.
This inconspicuous plant teaches us to look closely at every detail of nature. That even the cracks between rocks in a barren plane is a suitable place to call home and fill in a niche of an intricate web of life.

We have been busy preparing fields all over the farm lately, just waiting for some warm weather to get busy planting. like rye, are seeded in the fall to hold the soil in place and build organic matter while we wait for the optimal planting time. In this case we have two plots side by side, one is ready to plant now with an early season crop and the other will be ready in June when we terminate the rye and plant a later season succession. These are important techniques the make up a system

is about soil preservation. It is about promoting diversity. It is about building rather than depleting. Tillage disrupts the biological activity in soil, halting the growth of fungi and invertebrates who are allies of the plant kingdom. Working with nature rather than against it we can create a more wholistic system that feeds the soil that in turn feeds the plants. The first picture is of fungal “roots” that digest organic matter in and on top of the soil making nutrients available for plants. We try to promote these types of mushrooms which digest dead plant material and build soil. Having a rich biodiversity in soil helps balance the ecosystem that we grow in.

Ben loves tinkering. Farmers are a creative bunch. This time of year we still have snow on the ground but seedlings need to get started. In order to get the soil to the right temperature Ben has been rewiring old heating blankets that we drape over the tables and cover with plastic. We have germinate about 16 trays per table. The blanket underneath Keeps the soil warm even if it is snowing outside. That’s one of many ways we get a jump start on the season.

For us the ❄️ is a very important time. It means that the light will be returning. The plants respond and start to grow (in the greenhouse at first). In a few weeks/ months we will be harvesting fresh greens and starting all the seeds for a whole new season of crops. Happy winter solstice and may the light return to you as well.
