Today was a tough day for many of our neighbors with flash flooding in areas still recovering from Helene. It brought back some hard feelings and memories.

At the same time, after weeks of dry weather, the rain was much needed at the farm. The pastures are soaking it in, the creeks are flowing, and the grass is thankful given our extreme drought.

Moments like this are a reminder that resilience matters. As weather patterns continue to shift and climates change, farming is no longer just about producing food, but how to adapt alongside the land.

Regenerative agriculture is part of that foundational change. By building healthier soil, increasing water retention, mitigating erosion, and strengthening natural ecosystems, farms can become more resilient through both drought and heavy rain. It’s long-term work, and it doesn’t happen overnight. At HNG, we believe healthy land is essential for healthy communities. These days that feels very real.

Our annual Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) monitor training with Savory Hub Manager Mikey Hans-Barrientos was a blast. We loved getting to work with such an engaged and collaborative group of students and are excited to welcome new monitors into this work. We have no doubt that each of these monitors will continue to do great work both with our Hub and other Hubs around the world.

Sunshine, fresh pasture, and pigs being pigs.

Our pasture raised pigs spend their days outdoors where they can root, wallow, explore, and express their natural instincts. They’re never confined, never given antibiotics or added hormones, and are raised on a vegetarian, non-GMO diet right here in the USA.

We believe animals should be raised with care, respect, and room to thrive. Giving pigs access to pasture and allowing them to live naturally is an important part of producing high quality pork with integrity.

These moments out in the field are a good reminder that farming can work with nature, not against it.

Regenerative farming is all about cycling nutrients back through the land.

This winter’s compost pile has been brewing with nutrients from across our poultry operation—manure, chicken bedding, feather meal, and other byproducts that might otherwise be discarded. By composting these materials and returning them to the land, we’re creating a closed-loop system that feeds the soil naturally, helps build soil carbon, and supports healthy microbial life beneath the surface.

Now, we’re spreading that compost across the chamomile field to strengthen this pasture and carry those nutrients to parts of the farm the chickens don’t normally reach. With a little rain and a few more weeks, the cows should be back grazing here soon. 🤞🐄

The wonderful world of birding awaits! We still have a few spots left in Sunday’s bird walk with Clifton Avery. The farm is brimming with biodiversity right now as we reach the tail end of spring migration, and many species of our avian friends are passing through. We’ve been seeing and hearing an incredible variety of birds on the farm lately, and Clifton has captured photos of many during past bird walks. It’s always a special treat to spot species like indigo buntings, blue grosbeaks, black-throated green warblers, scarlet tanagers, northern parulas, and more.
