Fun Fact Friday and National Dentist’s Day:
but let’s talk about the animals who skipped teeth entirely: ducks and chickens.
Neither one has teeth. No brushing. No flossing. No “did I miss a spot?”

They use beaks to grab food, then rely on their gizzard (basically a built-in grinder) to break it down—often with the help of tiny stones or grit they swallow.
Humans? We don’t get a gizzard workaround. We get teeth… and the responsibility that comes with them.
So today’s appreciation post goes to dentists—the people who help keep our real, hard-working teeth healthy, strong, and in our heads where they belong.
Happy National Dentist’s Day. Don't forget to thank a dentist!

Fun Fact Friday:
For National Love Your Pet Day: ducks and chickens can both form real “friend bonds” with humans—but they show it differently.
Chickens can recognize and remember individual faces (human and chicken) and often follow their favorite person around like a tiny flock leader.
Ducks are famously social and can get so attached they’ll “imprint” on a person (especially if raised around you), choosing you as their safe buddy and sticking close.
So if your “pet” has feathers, loving them today can look like: a calm hangout in the yard, a little treat, and just being present—because to them, you’re not just the food source, you’re part of the flock.

Fun Fact Friday:
Ducks & Chickens: Winter Care in Minnesota
Keeping Your Flock Happy Through February's Deep Freeze ❄️

Ducks and chickens are hardy birds, but Minnesota winters demand extra attention. Here's what you need to know to keep your flock thriving through February:

Winter Housing Essentials:
*Insulation matters - Ensure coops and shelters are draft-free but well-ventilated to prevent moisture buildup
*Deep bedding - Use 6-8 inches of straw or wood shavings for warmth and comfort
*Heat sources - Consider heat lamps for extreme cold (below -10°F)
*Roosting bars - Birds huddle together at night; provide adequate roosting space

Water & Feeding in Extreme Cold:
*Fresh water daily - Use heated waterers to prevent freezing; birds need water even in winter
*High-calorie feed - Increase grain portions to help birds generate body heat
*Scratch grains - Offer before bedtime to keep birds warm overnight
*Unfrozen food - Check feeders regularly; frozen food won't sustain them

Duck Care:
*Water access - Even without a pond, ducks need water to dunk their heads and keep feathers healthy
*Shelter from wind - Ducks are water-loving but need protection from harsh Minnesota winds
*Bedding changes - Ducks create moisture; change bedding frequently to prevent frostbite

Chicken Care Tips:
*Comb protection - watch for frostbite on combs and wattles
*Perches, not nests - Chickens roost high in winter; ensure sturdy perches for safety
*Dust bath alternatives - Provide dry sand indoors for feather maintenance

Your hardy Blue Swedish birds can thrive in Minnesota winters with proper care and attention! Keep them warm, fed, and hydrated.

Good day everyone,

Our ducks and chickens are currently not laying any eggs due to winter weather arriving. I will post here as eggs become available. Last year, they would lay on warmer days throughout the winter. So, we may still get some just not such an abundance as we do during warmer months.

Fun Fact Friday:
Did you know that both ducks and chickens absolutely love apples as treats? Ducks will eagerly bob for apple pieces in water, using their natural dabbling behavior, while chickens will peck and scratch at fallen apples in orchards. Apples provide great nutrition for both birds - they're rich in vitamins A and C, and the pectin helps with digestion. Interestingly, chickens can actually help apple orchards by eating pest insects that damage apple trees, creating a beneficial relationship between the birds and the fruit!

Did you know?

Chicken eggs vs duck eggs!
🥚Duck eggs are like the "luxury sports car" of the egg world compared to chicken eggs!
🥚Duck eggs are about 50% larger than chicken eggs and pack a serious nutritional punch - they contain almost twice the cholesterol and significantly more protein, fat, and calories. But here's the really cool part: duck eggs have a much richer, creamier taste and their whites whip up fluffier than chicken eggs, making them a secret weapon for bakers who want extra-fluffy cakes and pastries!
🥚Duck eggs have a thicker shell and membrane, which means they stay fresh longer than chicken eggs. Plus, people who are allergic to chicken eggs can sometimes tolerate duck eggs just fine because they have different proteins.
🥚Duck eggs are often preferred for making traditional Chinese salted eggs (century eggs) because their larger size and different shell composition work better for the preservation process!

And here's a quirky one - duck eggs are often preferred for making traditional Chinese salted eggs (century eggs) because their larger size and different shell composition work better for the preservation process!
Are you thinking about trying duck eggs, or just curious about the differences? I find it fascinating how these seemingly similar foods can be so different! 🦆
