Hello again friends of Leffel Roots. We would like to let you know this weekend will be our last for 2025, and we’ll be having a VETERAN APPRECIATION WEEKEND to boot-10% off for all Veterans on Saturday and Sunday.

As the season comes to a close, our most important note is to say THANK YOU to everyone who visited this season or plans to visit this week. It always brings us great joy to reconnect with those of you who have shared this orchard with us over the years. We also look forward to meeting those of you who are new to Leffel Roots.

Regarding this last week, we have a couple reminders.

With the cold this Thursday night we should have FROSTY CRISP in our you-pick area. These are the extra sweet and juicy, post-freeze Honeycrisp. If you comment that you’d like them in the store, we may be able to bring some in on Friday.

Speaking of HONEYCRISP, they are a great storing apple. They will last 6 months in cold storage if you routinely cull any that show signs of damage or bruising.

Our frozen APPLE PIES will last even longer than that. One time we found one that had worked its way to the bottom of our chest freezer. We baked it and it was as good as any other we’ve had, even after a year in the freezer. Think about the fresh apple pie you can have as late as the 4th of July.

Remember, with the pie, you can pair some APPLE CIDER DONUTS. We found the secret to reheating donuts from frozen so they turn out fryer fresh. We even have the directions on business cards for you to take with you.

APPLE CIDER is something else that can be frozen for an extended period. Just remember with jugs as full as ours, you’ll want to take a cup out (to the shoulder of the jug) to make room for expansion.

With all the talk of freezing, PUMPKINS are something you don’t want to freeze. Luckily, we’ve been saving pumpkins for after this next freeze. There will be plenty in the patch Friday when comfortable temperatures return.

Finally, the NIGHT MAZE will be open Friday, 24 Oct and Sat 25 Oct. Last entry at 9. Admission required.

If you could like, share, comment, emoji, or any of the other things Facebook would like you to do, we’d appreciate the help getting the word out.

Thank all of you again for your business this season, in spite of our hail damage. The outpouring of support has been incredible.

Jim, Laura, and the Team at Leffel Roots

We just found out the Democratic Party of Eau Claire is planning for and advertising an event at our orchard. We welcome any group that wants to come out and have an enjoyable day at Leffel Roots. We want to make sure everyone knows this is not a protest and it is not an endorsement of any kind. Leffel Roots is apolitical.

Hi everyone. I want to take a quick minute to let you in on a feel good story. To all of you who donated money or put some apples in the donation bin, this is where your contribution went. This past week we sent the first batch of apples to Feed My People Food Bank (FMP). This was about 8000 lbs. To add some perspective, imagine these all go in 1/2 peck bags like you can get in the store. This would provide 5 lb. bags of apples to more than 1500 families. We expect much more to go to FMP as soon as our store closes for the season. Thank you all for your kindness.

Unfortunately, there is the other end of the spectrum. We feel bad that the 95% of good people get impacted by those who don't want to follow the rules. We wish we didn't have to do things like this booth to see if people paid for the maze. This weekend I had a second to sit on the patio and watch the activity at the orchard. I watched a young couple without maze maps or an apple picking bag enter the orchard. They walked up to this booth and realized someone could be watching. Instead of just going to enjoy the open areas of the property, they walked in front of the booth and away from the maze, only to circle around behind the booth and enter the maze anyway. After that, they proceeded to go into the orchard for an apple or two. If you wonder why orchards are charging admission, this is one of the reasons. I realize this doesn't pertain to most of you, but I want you to know why we do these types of things to everyone's detriment. We really don't want to.

With all that said, we do look forward to seeing you this week. With the kids out of school, we hope the rain holds off and you get to enjoy some nice fall weather.

Jim and Laura

If you have been watching the weather you know there is a freeze warning in effect for Tuesday night. We often get 2-3 degrees lower temperatures than other nearby locations. As a precaution we are picking the majority of the pumpkins and putting them in bins. Most pumpkins do not respond well to freezing temperatures. If you've seen a waxy looking pumpkin, it may have been frozen.

We will try to get them back in the patch once the freeze threat is past. We just wanted you to know in case you see the bins of pumpkins or us putting the pumpkins back in the patch.
