๐ Happy World Environment Day!
At Farmer Daveโs, caring for the land isnโt a separate initiative, itโs woven into everything we do, every day of the year.
Long before โsustainable agricultureโ was a buzzword, Dave was asking a simple question: how do we grow great food while taking better care of the land that makes it possible? That question still guides us today.
That work has been building for a long time. Twenty years ago, we started our CSA program as a way to grow and share food more efficiently with our community. Ten years ago, we opened our farm kitchen to help reduce food waste by turning surplus fruits and vegetables into soups, meals, baked goods, and other farm-made products people can enjoy.
Around the same time, we installed our first geothermal heating and cooling system in the packing building. Today, our packing building and now our farm stand still rely on geothermal energy, and we also capture the water used in a cistern to help irrigate the farm. Our commitment to renewable energy has continued to grow along with us. Our rooftops generate solar power, and by the end of this summer, our fourth solar array and a backup battery system will be up and running.
Weโve also expanded beyond the farm itself with four electric delivery vans helping us reduce emissions as we bring food into our communities, along with two EV charging stations available for guests when they visit the Dracut farm.
From conservation land and protective buffers to healthy soils, smart irrigation, and thoughtful growing practices, weโre always working to keep the farm resilient for the future.
We know thereโs always more to do but weโre proud of the progress so far, and grateful for the community that makes it possible.
Thanks for being part of it ๐
