Have you spotted the crescent moon bell hangings on the porch yet? 🌙🔔

Each one is a little different, but they all start the same way: a gold crescent hoop, brass bells, a crystal to catch the light, dried and preserved flowers and grasses, and a bundle of lace, burlap, ribbon, and trim. A good chunk of that ribbon was scraps headed for the trash. Washed, pressed, and given a second life. It’s the odds and ends that make them look so full.

Bells on a door go back centuries. Across Europe and Asia they were hung at thresholds to clear the air and welcome whoever came through. Today the name that stuck is “witch bells”: keep the good in, keep the unwelcome out.

The porch is closed this weekend while they get installed (and while we squeeze in a little birthday celebrating). We’ll be back open Friday, September 11.

Here’s the part I really want to say. It’s been almost a year since I first opened the porch to the neighborhood to share the recipes I love and the things we grow and make here. I did not expect this. I’ve had a hard time keeping up, and I know that’s a good problem, but it never feels good to watch someone walk up after the last boule or the last cookies are gone. That’s what these ovens are for. I’ll be able to bake about 60% more in a single go, which means more of what you actually come for, more often.

This community bought those ovens. Every cookie, every dozen eggs, every “we’ll be back next week.” Thank you. 💕

And October marks one year. I’ve got a few things in the works to make it a little extra special for everyone who’s been part of this. More soon!

A new sourdough cracker recipe we are obsessed with, and swapped cinnamon rolls for the most billowy cinnamon roll focaccia this weekend 🤤

You can find the chocolate chip cookies in the cooler (a must in this heat ☀️)
