Everything we buy these days goes through a screen first.

You tap a button and it’s on your porch a couple days later. Which is totally amazing in a lot of ways but I think we’ve lost the plot along the way here.

And put so many unnecessary layers between ourselves and our life.

I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to peel those layers off. When I was younger it was the several years in the skydiving world. When you’re falling out of a plane, that’s all you can think about.

Or when I worked at a natural burial place. No funeral home fluff, it was just the person, their family, some shovels and the ground.

Or when my wife gave birth to 2 of our kids at home. Just the real thing happening directly.

Turns out, groceries are no different.

Somewhere along the way we slid a barcode, a brand, and a layer of packaging between people and their food.

So we took it back off. You bring a jar or grab a paper bag, you fill it with exactly what you want. You can see it and smell it. Nothing in between.

People are saying analog is making a comeback. Vinyl records, film, paper books, handwriting, gardening, etc. I don’t think it’s nostalgia. I think people are tired of so much being digital and convenient and want something real back in their hands.

That’s the whole bet here.

Analog groceries in a very digital world.

Grocery stores have trained you to put your trust in the words, colors, and logos on the packaging instead of trusting the grocery store itself.

They’ve outsourced the trust component of the relationship with customers.

Here are 3 ways we’re picking Grocery Store Trust up off the ground and dusting it off:

1.) There are almost no logos in our entire store because we want food to be about food, not about the marketing wrapped around it.

2.) As much as possible, you can literally see the actual product itself before you buy it. And you get at least a little bit more connected to it simply by having to scoop it out.

3.) We do a lot of research and vetting before we bring new products into the store. Our standards are super high because we want you to walk in here and trust that we have your health and best interest in mind. Which frees you up to just shop for whatever you want without the worry & overthinking.

So, if that resonates and you want to keep seeing how we’re doing this grocery thing differently, I’d love if you followed along.

okay okay okay, among the 7,536 things we need to do before opening, these are things you in the community can help us with 🤞🏼🤞🏼

We’re officially on the hunt for:

1.) Employees for our Columbia location - email [email protected] with resume & info about yourself

2.) Organic sourdough baker in Columbia area who can do 1-2 deliveries per week

3.) A clean/non-toxic weekly laundry service in Columbia for our store towels. (Amelia does them at home for Dickson store, but 2 stores isn’t feasible)

**If you or someone you know would be perfect for any of this, tag them / have them send their info to: [email protected]

Day 68 of what’s been scoopin’ 🫙

Top sellers this week include the chai almonds, bath soak, and the cacao powder.

Quick stats for you: in the last 712 days since opening we’ve sold over 67,000lbs of food and had over 32,000 containers refilled and prevented from the landfill!

It’s gonna be amazing to see what these numbers grow to in the future.

Speaking of future, earlier this week we announced how we’re going to be opening our 2nd store in Columbia TN and the response so far has been a major relief and very positive.

Which is bittersweet to get all the dopamine now but still have so much work to do. Oh well!

If you want this week’s scoop report, comment ‘68’ and I’ll get it to you!

PLOT TWIST

For over a year now we’ve been trying to open a 2nd store in Clarksville TN.

And we were so so close to making it happen but a detail in the lease fell though and we couldn’t find any viable backup places to lease without majorly compromising on what we want.

Thankfully God works in mysterious ways and pointed us in the right direction. Amelia and I were up until like 1am a week or so ago, trying to think of what we’d do if the Clarksville plan fell through. We couldn’t find anything available that fit the bill there, so we started looking in Columbia. And we found the most perfect place. Every aspect feels so right and we’re tremendously excited about it.

Had the Clarksville plan worked, we would have been opening in like November. Now with the plot twist and new building in new town, we’re going to be opening sometime in August (🤞🏼🤞🏼)

It’s about to be the busiest summer of my life, but that’s what we signed up for :)

So for those of y’all that were pumped about Clarksville, don’t worry, it’ll still happen, just not yet. Apologies!

Those of you in and around Columbia, we cannot wait to bring you our little refill grocery store to your town!! Please like us 🙏🏼

If you wanna see the progress and keep up with all things Tare, today’s a great day to start following along 🌞

Day 67 of what’s been scoopin’ 🫙

Trending this week it’s roasted salted cashews, both of our new kombuchas, and the yellow popcorn 🍿

Great news! We’re passing on even more savings to you with 5 more price drops:

Banana chips $1 off /lb
Avocado oil $4 off /lb
White Thai Jasmine rice $1 off /lb
Rye grain $1.50 off / lb
Forbidden rice $1 off /lb

Last weekend we celebrated our 2 year business anniversary and had our best day of sales ever, which is super cool!

But I noticed that I don’t actually get my fulfillment from just the numbers. I mean obviously money is great and that’s how we stay in business, but I actually feel the most accomplished with the little problems we solve and the little tweaks we make each and every day to our process and customer experience.

Probably a more sustainable approach mentally!

If you want a breakdown of this week’s top 29 trending products and stats, comment ‘67’ below and I’ll get that to you!
