Farm work is not always out in the field. While we were tending to our newborn calf a few weeks ago, we had a water leak in the house. We were gone for about 8 hours and the way things work, the water line probably busted 5 minutes after we left for the day. The floors were toast and some AC duct in the basement (plus my grandparents’ 100+ year old dresser). Insurance allowed us to replace the floor, so we decided to re-do the kitchen as we were planning to do at some point.

Being do-it-yourselfers, it’s taking some time to get things done. My hubby still works a full time j-o-b and let’s face it, he is the brain and the brawn of this remodel. I like to color, but it sure isn’t time to paint yet.

This is where we are right now. Gas lines moved. Drains moved. Water lines are on the agenda for tomorrow. I can cook, but not use the sink just yet (or the dishwasher). Did I mention one of our sons is coming for a visit next week? Life goes on!

Tennessee… the volunteer state! And these pumpkins volunteered to grow right here on our farm.

It’s funny, in 2023 we gleaned a ton of pumpkins at a farm in Sparta TN. I pureed some for baking and the dogs, but I also shared pumpkins with the chickens. Our chickens free range. Every year since, we have had pumpkin plants grow in the weirdest places on our property.

This is also the year that I realized that the deer like pumpkin plants. The volunteer pumpkin plant was eaten nearly to short stubbs but these three pumpkins survived. Aren’t they cute?!

I had to buy eggs yesterday for the first time in nearly 5 years. My 8 original hens aren’t laying and my 17 newer pullets haven’t started laying yet, although they should be soon! Today I was gifted with a small egg from a new layer. Yayyyy!
