We unfortunately had to make the decision to let Paulie go this evening. His breathing took a hard turn for the worse, so we took him in for an emergency vet visit, where we confirmed he had a pretty nasty, very advanced case of pneumonia.

We fought like hell for this little guy. We tried everything we could to get him through it, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards for him.

We have the best livestock vet in the world who will always do everything in her power to give them a fighting chance. But sometimes, no matter how hard you fight, you have to know when it’s time to let go. It would have been selfish to continue prolonging his suffering just because making a decision to end a life is sad.

This is the heartbreaking reality of farming. Where there’s livestock, there’s sometimes deadstock. It never gets easier, and it never means we care any less. We fought like hell for him, and we would all over again.

His time here was short, but he knew snuggles, comfort, and care and that’s all that matters.

See you when I see you, buddy 🐮

The Rhode Island DOH is also protecting you from the Girl Scouts now.

Where does this end?!

🤦🏼‍♀️

A picture of an annoyed mare, which basically she is just my twin, to announce that apparently the DOH stopped at my daughter's Girlscouts troop bake sale this weekend to say they can't do it next year without a trained food safety person (which basically means they can't). So like yeah that's the world we made.

For reference the Girlscouts literally used to bake ALL the cookies they sold. Next up church potlucks I'm sure. But don't worry they can still sell the chemical filled goodies in boxes no problem.

Hey, Town Farm Road Neighbors!

The flags are down and stored for the season.

Thank you all so much for your support and for all the kind words about the flags. We’ve loved seeing them out there and appreciate everyone who has reached out with such nice things to say!

We did learn that our flagpoles weren’t quite the quality we had hoped for, so we’re going to upgrade to some new ones before the next round.

Thank you again for helping make this little community project so special. We’ll see you all in the spring!

And one shameless plug 😂

🗳️ Vote Britney Boyer for Coventry Town Council District 2 on November 3rd!

Thank you for supporting our community, and thank you for supporting me! 🇺🇸❤️

OKAY, HEAR ME OUT before you laugh at me, please read this entire post!

I read A LOT about cows. Like, an embarrassingly large amount 🤣 and recently, I came across some interesting research from a farmer experimenting with giving calves warm water in a bottle immediately after their milk feeding.

I’ve always heard mixed opinions about bottle feeding water to calves because of the risk of aspiration pneumonia. While that risk may be low when done correctly, it’s still a risk, which is why I’ve always offered water in a bucket instead.

Here’s where the science gets interesting. Milk and water are handled differently in a calf’s digestive system. Milk triggers the esophageal groove reflex, which directs milk toward the abomasum, and water goes primarily into the rumen. There’s research into how hydration, rumen development, and solid feed intake are connected, so I figured this was something worth learning more about.

The idea behind offering warm water after milk is that it may encourage rumen activity and potentially stimulate calves to eat more solid feed.

And honestly, when I thought about our little friend Paulie, who lost so much weight during that nasty battle with scours, I figured anything that might safely encourage him to eat more was worth trying.

I started offering him a bottle of warm water immediately after his milk, and I’ve noticed that his grain intake has skyrocketed.

Disclaimer 😂 I’m sharing my experience, not claiming this is a miracle cure or that it’ll work for every calf. I haven’t established that the warm water caused the increase, and I’d love to see more research on this specific practice!

As always, talk to your vet, consider your calf’s individual needs, and monitor them closely. Especially with calves recovering from illness, proper hydration, nutrition, and veterinary guidance are incredibly important.

And please, nobody come for me if your baby cow doesn’t do the same. I am simply sharing something interesting I’ve been reading about and what I’ve personally observed with this dude.

I need another hobby besides obsessively researching cows 😂

Why does he keep head butting the bottle?

That head-butting motion is actually a natural nursing behavior. When calves nurse from their mom, they often bang the udder (ow 😖) with their head. This helps stimulate a milk letdown.

So when a bottle calf slams its head into the bottle, it’s basically saying, “Come on, Mom, I know there’s more in there!” 😂

It’s normal and is part of their natural suckling instinct. It taught me QUICK not to lean the bottle against my stomach or thigh and try to multitask and use my hands for something else 😂
