Long day on the farm. So many people asking for apple cider. Depressing to explain how there will be no apple harvest this year. On a positive note….. what a wonderful surprise to see what a customer left in the Big Red Barn, two “bee happy” mugs and a cute matching place setting. Thank you….. 😊. And as I usually end my workday, sitting with my dogs watching the beautiful moon rise.

Female beaver was hit by car trying to access our pond, sad, but a blessing. I’m pretty sure they would make short work of the apple trees. But we now welcome some beaver energy to our orchard in her new resting place.

This is not just a “my farm” situation. The cold spring affected every farmer in our region.

……finding more good news to focus on around our farm. This elderberry bush is just amazing. I call it the Jolly Green Giant. It’s in its second growing season. Already taller than my house and continuing to tower higher. It will be hard to get those berries up top. Also this is the earliest flowering elderberry on the farm. Way ahead of our other bushes! I’m pretty sure this is a naturally occurring hybrid. The darker leaves resemble a “black lace” variety that grows a few feet from it. The green variety resembles the “Adam’s” variety, which grow abundantly around our farm. We also have native elderberry sprinkled around too. So many flower heads. Berry output is going to be impressive if I can beat the birds to them 🙏. I also have to thank the birds ( hens🤷🏻‍♂️) for this bush. I’m sure they ate one of the cross pollinated berries and did their poultry p**p magic!
