Just another day moving birds to fresh pasture and these chickens are loving it!🐓🍗🐔

Moving our chickens daily is so important!

1. It allows the chickens to get off of their own f***s. This keeps the birds healthy and comfortable. Because of that we don’t have to use antibiotics, coccidiostats, and we don’t even have to vaccinate our chickens! They stay healthy on their own

2. The move allows the birds to get fresh forage daily. Once the ground is soiled they will stop grazing. These birds forage most aggressively right after the move because the forage is fresh.

Not all “pasture raised chicken” is created equal!
Know where your food comes from and how it’s raised!

Our focus on the farm is to offer the most natural life possible to the animals we care for. If we do this the animal is healthier and the food we eat is healthier

An extremely important part of raising any kind of chicken is keeping its digestive system robust. Chickens don’t have teeth so in nature that chicken will eat small pieces of grit found in the dirt to aid in digestion. This grit goes into an organ called the gizzard, a strong muscular organ in the digestive tract. As the gizzard contracts during digestion the grains, seeds, and forage grind against the grit in the gizzard turning the food into a paste so that the bird can more readily absorb the nutrients the food is trying to offering it.

While our chicks are in the brooder they don’t have access to the grit found in the soil outside, so we offer a grit to them formulated with probiotics. This keeps the chicks healthy and vibrant while they wait for the pasture outside where they will find nature’s grit!

When we put fresh shavings down for the chicks it’s always enjoyable to watch them play with each other.
A few chicks will normally find a small colorful wood chip and then begin fighting over it. Just a big game of keep away! 🐥 🐣 🐔

It’s a lively morning today in the brooder! 🐔 💡The chicks are going through what we call “the ugly stage”. They have begun shedding their baby fuzz to grow feathers that will insulate them from the weather.

After receiving a fresh layer of shavings this morning the birds are busying eating breakfast! Just another 10 days or so until they’ll be hitting the range!

One of the most critical things to consider when getting chicks is temperature. Chicks the first few days of their life need around a 90 degree climate to maintain healthy body function. After the first week we begin raising our heat lamps to get them to assimilate to cooler temperatures. By 3 weeks old the lamps are taken out and these birds are ready for pasture!
