We have some sad news from the farm this week:
Our little brown lamb, Flopsy, who was the second born of twins, was a little hunched from the beginning, but she seemed okay otherwise. Then on Thursday, she became ill very suddenly. She struggled to stand and wouldn't drink from the teat, even when her mouth was placed on it.
We spent a long evening on Thursday trying to keep her warm and feed her milk substitute from a syringe, but she didn't make it through the night.
This was our first lamb loss in our three and a half years raising sheep. The average mortality rate is around 20% for lambs, so we have been doing really well. Unfortunately, this is part of raising animals.
It's difficult to have life slip through your fingers, especially a young lamb that seemed healthy and had an adorable personality. Mom and her other lamb are happy and are running, eating and bounding along. We'll have some happier updates on lambs and other animals to follow.
