Things have been busy!

The broiler chickens have been out on grass for a few weeks. The pigs have a new pool, the sheep can't keep up with how quickly the grass is growing, and the egg layers are forming packs. πŸ˜… We have been working hard on the garden, which was turning into a bit of a jungle.

We will have a chicken pickup day and farm tours coming up on June 14th. More details to come soon!

We had some big branches fall from the recent strong winds.

We extended the chicken run so they can help prepare the garden for planting. They dig it πŸ˜„

We have some sad news from the farm this week:

Our little brown lamb, Flopsy, who was the second born of twins, was a little hunched from the beginning, but she seemed okay otherwise. Then on Thursday, she became ill very suddenly. She struggled to stand and wouldn't drink from the teat, even when her mouth was placed on it.

We spent a long evening on Thursday trying to keep her warm and feed her milk substitute from a syringe, but she didn't make it through the night.

This was our first lamb loss in our three and a half years raising sheep. The average mortality rate is around 20% for lambs, so we have been doing really well. Unfortunately, this is part of raising animals.

It's difficult to have life slip through your fingers, especially a young lamb that seemed healthy and had an adorable personality. Mom and her other lamb are happy and are running, eating and bounding along. We'll have some happier updates on lambs and other animals to follow.
