Same roots. Same upbringing. Completely different personalities. 🌸😂

Not my cosmos growing an entire dysfunctional family on ONE plant.

We’ve got the golden child, the drama queen, the hopeless romantic, the introvert, and at least one who definitely needs therapy.

Same plant. Seven different shades of pink and white. Zero explanation for the attitude.

🌸 Be honest. Which sibling are you? Drop your number in the comments. And send this to the sibling who knows EXACTLY which flower they are. 👀

Some people dream of beaches. I dream of disappearing into a garden where nobody needs anything from me. 🌿

Just birds singing, leaves rustling, and at least a thousand hostas minding their own business.

Tell me I’m not the only one whose idea of paradise looks like this. 💚

🌱 Save this for a little moment of peace when life gets loud.

💚 Send it to someone who would happily get lost here with you.

Follow Lazy Toad Farm for more shade garden inspiration, hosta obsession, and little moments of garden therapy.

Apparently, we’re incapable of leaving perfectly good plants alone. 🌸🎃

First, we’re stuffing pumpkins with flowers and succulents. Then, we’re turning dried flowers into Christmas ornaments.

And you’re invited to both!

We’ve got TWO Lazy Toad Farm workshops coming up, and they’re perfect for a little creative escape, a date with your bestie, or just an excuse to make something beautiful with your own two hands.

🎃 PUMPKINS GONE WILD
Saturday, October 24 at In Hot Water in Annandale

Ordinary mini pumpkins get a fabulous makeover with colorful dried flowers, succulents, and a little Lazy Toad magic.

🎄 DRIED FLOWER ORNAMENT WORKSHOP
Coming in November!

We’re turning flowers from the farm into one-of-a-kind ornaments you’ll actually want to keep forever. Or give as gifts, if you’re feeling generous.

No experience needed for either class. We’ll provide the supplies, instruction, and creative encouragement. You just show up ready to have fun.

Come for one. Come for both. Bring someone who could use a little creative therapy.

🌸 Space is limited, and registration is open through the link in our bio!

Which one are you coming to? Team Pumpkin 🎃 or Team Christmas 🎄?

28 years ago today, Matthew Shepard was murdered.

I remember it. I was in the school library when I heard about it.

I remember his face. I remember his name. I remember knowing what had happened to him.

And although I don’t think I understood it at the time, I am certain some part of me heard the message: this is what can happen to people like you.

I wouldn’t come out for years.

There are a lot of reasons for that. But looking back, I can’t imagine that Matt wasn’t one of them.

I’m not sure there is another person I’ve never met who has occupied so much space in my life.

Years later, I stood at his final resting place at the National Cathedral. I’ve had the privilege of directing The Laramie Project in a rural community not so different from the places where Matt and I grew up. I’ve said his name in classrooms, theaters, conversations, and spaces where q***r young people were trying to figure out whether it was safe to be fully themselves.

Somehow, across 28 years, Matt has kept showing up in my life.

That’s a strange thing to say about someone whose life was taken at 21.

I sometimes wonder who he would have become. What he would have cared about. Who he would have loved. What completely ordinary things would have filled these 28 years that he never got to have.

And I think about all of us who grew up watching what happened to him.

Those of us who learned, consciously or not, that being known could be dangerous. That sometimes survival meant being quiet. Being careful. Waiting.

Matt never knew me.

But his life changed mine.

So today I’m remembering Matthew Shepard not only for the way he died, but for the life he should have been allowed to keep living.

And for every q***r kid who deserves to grow up without having to calculate the cost of being known.

28 years later, I’m still carrying Matt with me.

I suspect I’m not the only one.

I’m not great at measuring Miracle-Gro. 🎃🌸

Now my pumpkins are blooming and I fear there’s no going back.

Turns out all those little flowers I dried from the garden were just waiting for their October comeback. A couple mini pumpkins, dried flowers, hot glue, and suddenly I’m looking around the house wondering what else needs to bloom.

Isn’t this a fun way to keep a little piece of the garden around after flower season ends.

⚠️ Side effects may include putting dried flowers on every pumpkin you own and burning your fingers with hot glue.

Send this to the friend who absolutely cannot be trusted alone with a glue gun and a bag of mini pumpkins.

I’m not saying Dr. Seuss was a flower farmer… but I have questions. 🌸

Because some of the things growing around here look less like actual plants and more like something that should have a tiny Who living underneath them. Or in the case of the birdhouse gourd, in them!

Curly. Fuzzy. Completely unnecessary shapes. 10/10, no notes.

Nature gets WEIRD, and honestly, those are usually the plants I love most.

🌱 Which one would you actually grow?

And send this to the gardener who would absolutely order the weirdest seed in the catalog just because they could.

Their days are numbered. 🌸☠️

The dahlias are still showing off. The bouquets are still ridiculously pretty. And somewhere in Minnesota, frost is quietly stretching and getting ready to ruin everything.

We don’t know exactly how many flower days we have left, but we DO know how this story ends. 🥶

So this is your friendly reminder to get the flowers while the getting is good. Buy the bouquet. Put flowers on your kitchen table. Bring some to a friend. Get one for absolutely no reason other than February is coming and we’re all going to miss this.

Because pretty soon, Lazy Toad Farm will be transitioning from “look at all these flowers!” to “look at all these sticks!”

🌸 Flowers available while Mother Nature allows it.

Anyone else in denial that flower season is ending? 🙋 Or are you ready for winter🙅‍♂️🥶
