🍓Driscoll’s- Let’s Talk About It!🍓
Everyone else has an opinion so we thought why not share ours!
Overall feeling, anger, but unfortunately not surprised. As a family that has been greatly impacted by our broken food system, we see this latest news story as just that. Driscoll’s is just the brand that is in the news today, the bigger story here is that this is happening everywhere. Our food system in collaboration with our government has failed its people yet again.
This story has only reinforced why we at Land of Grace chose to be an organic only farm. This isn’t just about pesticides. It’s about the toxic chemicals across the board that are used in growing the food we feed our families. It’s about the bleach that is run through irrigation lines, and the synthetic fertilizers that plants are grown in so they can achieve higher yields. It’s about the lack of transparency provided to the consumer about how their food was actually grown so they can make the right decisions for their family. And now it’s about deciphering the “truth” as people rush to cover up all of the toxins that they have been using for years, leaving the end consumer having to “trust” the very system that has been poisoning them. If we really want to see a change then as we all know it will have to come from the top and while I will continue to pray and advocate for that change, I do not foresee it happening anytime soon.
So what do we do in the meantime? Our advice, from one mom to another:
1. Shop local and ask questions! Do not assume because a product is sitting on a shelf at a farm stand that it was grown at that farm. Look for the USDA organic seal when being told their products are “organic”. Anyone can go through the process to get certified, no matter how big or how small of an operation they are.
2. Get to know your farmers. I can only speak on behalf of Land of Grace, but we love talking to our customers about how our food is grown. We take pride and joy in being able to help others learn organic practices that they can implement in their own homes.
3. Trust your gut! (A mother’s intuition is a thing!) When asking tough questions about what is actually used in their farming practices , if you feel like you are getting the run around then you already know the answer.
4. Don’t give up, give yourself some grace. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you go down the rabbit hole of “toxic things” in our world today. Don’t feel defeated, you are not in this alone!
