🐝 Exciting news from our apiary today! 🌼

We participated in the APHIS United States National Survey of Honey Bee Health through the University of Nebraska’s Ecology Department. 🧪 Samples collected from our hives will help document honey bee diseases, pests, and pathogens across the U.S. and improve colony health monitoring nationwide. 🇺🇸

This important survey also watches for invasive threats to honey bees, including Tropilaelaps clareae, Apis cerana, and Slow Bee Paralysis Virus. 🔍🐛🦠

Thank you to the University of Nebraska and APHIS for this vital work — and to our community for supporting healthy bees and stronger pollination. 🌻💛

🐝 Beekeeping experiment with plastic frames! 🧪 Over the years I tried switching to plastic frames — so I tested unwaxed, single-, double-, triple-waxed, and super-heavy-waxed (waxed myself) frames in the hive. The bees ignored unwaxed frames 🚫, single-waxed went wonky 🌀, double-waxed improved a bit 👍, triple-waxed looked great ✅, and my extra-heavy-waxed frames were drawn out fast and perfect ✨. Lesson: bees WILL use plastic frames — just wax ’em right! 🐝💛

Long Lang hive update! 🐝🌼

Started both hives this spring — one from a split and one from a swarm. The split started on 5 frames and has slowly grown to 12 frames 🧩➡️📈. The swarm exploded into life and is now packed with 32 frames — booming! 💥🍯

I’m thinking both will be amazing resource hives rather than honey producers, and overall I’m happy with how they’re shaping up. One nuisance: ants under the top cover 🐜😅. Tried the cinnamon trick — seems to have worked really well! 🌿✨

🐝🔨 New Hive Experiment in the Bee Yard! 🍯🌼

Been busy building and testing out some horizontal hives, and I finally got to check on them today! 🙌

A few weeks ago, I took splits from some of my strong Langstroth colonies and moved them into these new setups. First inspection is in the books and… 👇

👑 Queens are looking AMAZING — strong, healthy, and laying like champs
🏗️ Comb building is in full swing — they’re drawing out frames fast
🐝 Bees are doing bee things… which means a few quirks 😅

One thing I didn’t love today — the frames wanted to come up with the inner cover boards. Looks like I’ll need to tweak the design a bit to outsmart their creativity 🤔

Overall though, I’m really excited about the potential here. These horizontal hives could turn into awesome resource hives — easy to pop into and grab what I need when I need it 👍

Right now I’ve got one colony per hive, but I’m already thinking ahead… might try running multiple colonies once swarm season kicks in 🐝🌪️

📣 Stay tuned as I keep experimenting and dialing these in this season. Should be a fun ride!
