Hey folks, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about Trump‘s recent post regarding allowing farmers to process and sell meat. So here is my take on the down and dirty on what’s happening with meat inspection and the federal government. The short answer is, I don’t anticipate any major changes that would benefit us coming anytime soon. There hasn’t been a lot of follow-through on the promises made, and it appears that it’s more likely that post was just a bit of political theater to deflect from reality. I think there’s a better chance that we would see some increase in marked access via a bill that is currently included in the Farm. Bill called the prime act, which would allow us to take animals to custom exempt facilities and be able to sell the meat at our retail shop. That effort has been ongoing for a very long time, but instantly opposed by supporters of the big corporate Food Monopolies. The Farm Bill is currently on the agenda in the agricultural committees and will likely go into Mark up soon. The current version of the Farm bill is not great. This would be a great time to call your Congress person or Senator and encourage them to push for more support for small farms, nutritional programs, and young farmers in the Farm bill, as well as support for the prime act.
